Menstruation after medical abortion?
Hello, Doctor.
I underwent a medical abortion on April 8, and the bleeding lasted about two weeks before it stopped.
On the evenings of May 12 and 13, I noticed a small amount of dark discharge, and this morning (May 14), I observed some bright red blood.
Could you please tell me if this is considered my period? Will the duration of my first period after the abortion be the usual 5-7 days, or could it be shorter? Additionally, is the dark discharge I experienced in the past two days normal? Thank you, Doctor!

More Info
After a medication abortion, it is common for individuals to have questions about what to expect regarding their menstrual cycle and any bleeding that may occur. In your case, you experienced a medication abortion on April 8, and after a couple of weeks of discharge, you noticed some dark discharge and then bright red blood. Let's break down what you might expect during this time.
Firstly, after a medication abortion, it is normal for the body to go through a period of adjustment. The bleeding you experienced after the abortion is often referred to as "post-abortion bleeding" or "lochia." This bleeding can vary in color and consistency, and it is not uncommon for it to start as dark brown or black discharge, which is typically older blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus. The bright red blood you observed on May 14 could indicate the beginning of your first menstrual period post-abortion, but it is essential to consider a few factors.
1. Timing of Your First Period: After a medication abortion, the first menstrual period can vary significantly from person to person. Generally, it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks for your menstrual cycle to return to normal. Some individuals may experience their first period as early as 4 weeks after the abortion, while others may take longer. Given that your abortion was on April 8, and you are now experiencing bleeding in mid-May, it is possible that this could be your first period.
2. Duration and Flow: The duration of your first period after a medication abortion can also differ from your typical cycle. While many individuals experience a menstrual period lasting 5 to 7 days, it is not unusual for the first period to be shorter or longer, or even lighter than usual. Your body is still adjusting, and hormonal levels may take some time to stabilize.
3. Normal Variations: The dark discharge you experienced prior to the bright red blood is generally considered normal. It is common for the body to expel old blood and tissue after an abortion, and this can manifest as dark discharge. As your body continues to heal, you may notice variations in bleeding patterns.
4. When to Seek Medical Attention: While some bleeding and discharge are expected, you should seek medical attention if you experience heavy bleeding (soaking through a pad in an hour or less), severe pain, fever, or any other concerning symptoms. These could indicate complications that require medical evaluation.
In summary, the bleeding you are experiencing could very well be your first menstrual period after the medication abortion. The duration and flow may differ from your usual cycle, and the dark discharge is likely a normal part of the healing process. If you have any concerns or if the bleeding becomes heavy or accompanied by other symptoms, do not hesitate to contact your healthcare provider for further guidance. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
