Sleep issues

I have been suffering from insomnia for over ten years, averaging 3 to 5 hours of sleep.
I often wake up after sleeping for just one or two hours, sometimes after 10 to 30 minutes, and I experience vivid dreams.
I do not have a habit of substance or alcohol addiction.
I frequently have migraines, forgetfulness, and difficulty concentrating.
I easily become tense and anxious.
Sometimes, I feel nauseous while eating, and I have many negative thoughts that I do not share with others; I struggle to communicate with my family.
I do not want to live to my forties or fifties; I feel that my current age is just right.
I have had suicidal thoughts, and while I have not acted on them, I am considering which method would be most convenient.
I feel that I have no value in life.
I have previously taken a depression assessment but felt it was inaccurate.
I have not consulted a doctor and am unclear about what the underlying issues might be.

Hello, internet user: If you suspect that your insomnia is caused by depression, I strongly recommend that you seek medical attention at a nearby mental health facility.
Additionally, you can download the "Mood Temperature" app to assess your mental and physical well-being and determine if your condition is indeed concerning.
The app also provides information on local mental health resources, allows you to read related e-books, and offers access to pre-recorded videos by experts for reference.

Chronic insomnia is a pervasive issue that can significantly impact mental health, leading to a variety of psychological and physical symptoms. Your description of experiencing insomnia for over ten years, averaging only 3-5 hours of sleep, is concerning and indicates a serious sleep disorder that warrants attention. The fact that you often wake up after just one or two hours of sleep, coupled with vivid dreams, suggests that your sleep architecture may be disrupted, preventing you from reaching the deeper, restorative stages of sleep.

The relationship between chronic insomnia and mental health is well-documented. Insomnia can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety and depression, creating a vicious cycle where poor sleep leads to increased anxiety and depressive symptoms, which in turn perpetuates insomnia. Your experiences of frequent headaches, forgetfulness, and difficulty concentrating are common cognitive impairments associated with sleep deprivation. The heightened levels of anxiety and negative thoughts you describe can further complicate your mental health, leading to feelings of hopelessness and a diminished sense of self-worth.

It's particularly concerning that you have had thoughts of self-harm and feel a lack of value in your existence. These feelings are serious and indicate that you may be experiencing a significant depressive episode. It's crucial to understand that these thoughts are not uncommon among individuals struggling with chronic insomnia and depression, but they do require immediate attention and intervention.

You mentioned that you have not consulted a doctor about your symptoms. Seeking professional help is essential. A mental health professional can provide a comprehensive evaluation to determine the underlying causes of your insomnia and mental health struggles. This may include assessing for conditions such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or other mood disorders. Treatment options may include cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which has been shown to be effective in treating chronic insomnia by addressing the thoughts and behaviors that contribute to sleep difficulties.

Additionally, medication may be considered if appropriate. While you noted that you do not have a history of substance abuse, certain medications can help regulate sleep patterns and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, medication should be used in conjunction with therapy for the best outcomes.

It's also important to address the physical symptoms you are experiencing, such as nausea when eating and frequent headaches. These could be manifestations of anxiety or stress, but they may also indicate other underlying health issues that should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

In terms of immediate steps you can take, consider implementing some sleep hygiene practices. This includes establishing a regular sleep schedule, creating a calming bedtime routine, and making your sleep environment conducive to rest (dark, quiet, and cool). Limiting caffeine and screen time before bed can also help improve sleep quality.

Lastly, I encourage you to reach out to someone you trust to talk about your feelings. Isolation can exacerbate feelings of despair, and having a support system can be invaluable. Remember, you are not alone in this struggle, and there are resources available to help you regain control over your mental health and improve your sleep.

In summary, chronic insomnia is a serious condition that can have profound effects on mental health. Seeking professional help is crucial, and there are effective treatments available. You deserve support and care to help you navigate this challenging time. Please consider reaching out to a mental health professional as soon as possible.
