If the wound is oozing blood after being bandaged, should the dressing be changed immediately?

Dear Doctor, this afternoon I accidentally cut my left hand's middle and index fingers with a utility knife (at the joints on the back of the hand).
Due to continuous bleeding, I went to the clinic as soon as it opened.
The cuts are approximately 3 cm in length, with one being 0.1 cm deep and the other 0.2 cm deep.
The clinic doctor assessed that stitches were not necessary and advised to immobilize the fingers with a splint to prevent bending.
After dressing the wounds, I was instructed to keep them dry, change the dressing myself in 2-3 days, and was given an ointment and medication.

Now, after the dressing, I noticed that the gauze on my middle finger has some blood seepage.
I quickly elevated my hand, and after about half an hour, it seems that the bleeding has stopped.
The blood on the gauze appears to have dried.
Should I change to clean gauze now, or should I follow the doctor's advice and wait to change the dressing in two days? Additionally, my index finger, which is not bleeding, is more painful when I lightly touch the joint area compared to the middle finger.
Is this normal?

When dealing with post-surgical wounds, especially those that are bleeding, it is crucial to follow proper care guidelines to promote healing and prevent complications. Based on your situation, where you sustained cuts on your fingers and are experiencing some bleeding, here are some recommendations and insights regarding wound care.

Firstly, it is important to understand that some bleeding or oozing from a wound after surgery can be normal, especially in the initial days following the injury. The body’s natural response to injury includes inflammation and the formation of a clot, which may lead to some fluid accumulation. If you notice that the bleeding has stopped after elevating your hand and the blood appears to have dried on the bandage, this is a positive sign. However, if the bleeding resumes or if there is a significant amount of blood soaking through the bandage, it may be necessary to change the dressing sooner than advised.

In your case, since the doctor instructed you to keep the bandage on for 2-3 days, it is generally advisable to follow that guidance unless there are signs of excessive bleeding or infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge). If the current bandage is saturated with blood, it is appropriate to gently replace it with a clean dressing to maintain a sterile environment and prevent infection. When changing the bandage, ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly and use sterile materials to minimize the risk of introducing bacteria into the wound.

Regarding the pain you are experiencing in your index finger, it is not uncommon for adjacent areas to feel more sensitive or painful after an injury, even if they are not directly affected. This can be due to several factors, including inflammation, nerve irritation, or referred pain from the injured area. If the pain persists or worsens, it would be wise to consult your doctor for further evaluation.

In summary, if your bandage is soaked with blood, it is advisable to change it to a clean one while being careful to maintain a sterile technique. If the bleeding has stopped and the bandage is dry, you can wait until the scheduled time to change it as per your doctor's instructions. Always monitor the wound for signs of infection and consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your healing process. Proper wound care is essential for recovery, and following your doctor's advice will help ensure the best outcome.
