Is chest tightness considered a disorder of the autonomic nervous system?
Hello, doctor.
I originally had symptoms of rapid heartbeat and chest tightness due to hyperthyroidism, but after developing a regular exercise routine and taking my medication on time, my symptoms have significantly improved and no longer affect my daily life.
The pandemic has lasted for over a month now, and I wonder if it’s due to stress from daily life and spending time with my young child, who is very dependent on me and leaves me with no time to relax.
I have started experiencing chest tightness and shallow breathing again.
I have gone to the emergency room twice, where I had an electrocardiogram, respiratory observations, chest X-rays, and blood tests for hyperthyroidism, all of which came back normal.
It seems that my symptoms may not be closely related to hyperthyroidism.
The symptoms are most severe when my child wakes up and starts calling for me, leading to chest tightness to the point where I can’t breathe, irritability, dizziness, and poor appetite.
The symptoms tend to ease by the afternoon.
I have a history of obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety, but before this, I had found a way to coexist with my symptoms until the pandemic seemed to throw me off balance again.
I would like to ask the doctor if the chest tightness and shallow breathing are related to my anxiety disorder, or if this could be considered a form of autonomic nervous system dysfunction? The only time I can relax is during my half-hour jog every evening, but when it’s time to sleep and my child comes to me, or in the morning when my child is looking for me, I start to feel like I can’t breathe again.
I apologize for the lengthy description, and I appreciate your response, doctor.

More Info
Chest tightness and shallow breathing can indeed be closely related to both anxiety and autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. Your experience of these symptoms, especially in the context of stressors such as the pandemic and the demands of caring for young children, suggests that psychological factors may be playing a significant role.
Understanding the Connection
1. Anxiety and Chest Tightness: Anxiety is known to trigger a range of physical symptoms, including chest tightness, shortness of breath, and palpitations. When a person is anxious, the body enters a "fight or flight" response, which is mediated by the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. This response can lead to increased heart rate, muscle tension, and changes in breathing patterns, all of which can contribute to the sensation of chest tightness. Your history of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may predispose you to experience these symptoms, especially during stressful times.
2. Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction: The autonomic nervous system regulates involuntary bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rate. Dysregulation of this system can lead to symptoms such as chest tightness and shallow breathing. In your case, the stress from the pandemic and the demands of parenting may have exacerbated any underlying autonomic dysfunction, leading to heightened sensitivity to physical sensations and increased anxiety.
Symptoms and Triggers
You mentioned that your symptoms tend to worsen when your child wakes up and calls for you, which indicates a potential trigger related to stress and responsibility. The feeling of being overwhelmed can activate the sympathetic nervous system, leading to physical symptoms like chest tightness and difficulty breathing. Additionally, your symptoms seem to improve later in the day, which may suggest that they are closely tied to your daily stressors and emotional state.
Coping Strategies
1. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga, can help manage anxiety and promote relaxation. These techniques can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which counteracts the stress response and may alleviate symptoms.
2. Regular Physical Activity: You mentioned that running helps you relax. Regular exercise is an excellent way to reduce anxiety and improve overall well-being. It releases endorphins, which can enhance mood and reduce stress.
3. Structured Time for Yourself: Finding dedicated time for self-care, even if it's brief, can help you recharge. This could involve setting boundaries around your time with your child or finding moments throughout the day to engage in activities that you enjoy.
4. Professional Support: Given your history of anxiety and the recent exacerbation of symptoms, it may be beneficial to consult with a mental health professional. They can provide tailored strategies and support to help you manage anxiety and its physical manifestations more effectively.
Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms of chest tightness and shallow breathing are likely related to both anxiety and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. The interplay between psychological stressors and physical symptoms is complex, and addressing both aspects is crucial for effective management. By incorporating relaxation techniques, maintaining physical activity, and seeking professional support, you can work towards alleviating these distressing symptoms and improving your overall quality of life. Remember, it’s important to prioritize your mental health, especially during challenging times.
