Post-circumcision care
Today is the third day after my circumcision.
When I urinate, everything seems fine, but two minutes after finishing, I notice that the area under the glans has suddenly turned deep red in half of the circular area.
However, when I wiped it with tissue, there was no blood.
After a few minutes, I noticed a small amount of blood coming from the stitches on the wound.
Now, an hour later, although there is no blood flowing out, that circular area is still deep red, and I can see that there is blood inside.
Is this normal? I just asked the surgeon who performed the procedure, and he said not to worry, that the blood will resolve on its own.
Is that true?

Hello: Take good care of the wound; the blood clot or hematoma will be absorbed.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing circumcision, it is common to experience a range of symptoms as your body heals. The fact that you are on the third day post-surgery is significant, as this is a critical time for healing, and it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely.
Firstly, the deep red color you are observing under the glans (the head of the penis) is likely a normal part of the healing process. After circumcision, it is not unusual for the area to appear red or inflamed as the body responds to the surgical trauma. The redness indicates increased blood flow to the area, which is part of the healing process. However, it is crucial to differentiate between normal healing and potential complications.
The presence of a small amount of blood on the stitches is also not uncommon. Stitches can sometimes cause minor bleeding as they hold the skin together, especially if there is any movement or friction in the area. If the bleeding is minimal and stops quickly, it is generally not a cause for concern. However, if you notice significant bleeding or if the bleeding does not stop, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.
Your surgeon's reassurance that the blood will resolve on its own is typically accurate, provided that the bleeding is minor and there are no other concerning symptoms. It is essential to follow any post-operative care instructions given by your surgeon, which may include keeping the area clean, avoiding strenuous activities, and monitoring for signs of infection.
In terms of what to expect after circumcision, here are some common symptoms and care tips:
1. Swelling and Discoloration: It is normal to experience some swelling and discoloration in the days following the surgery. This should gradually improve over time.
2. Pain Management: Mild to moderate pain is expected after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage discomfort. Always follow your doctor's recommendations regarding medication.
3. Hygiene: Keeping the area clean is crucial. You may be advised to gently clean the area with warm water and mild soap. Avoid using any harsh soaps or products that could irritate the skin.
4. Activity Restrictions: It is generally recommended to avoid vigorous physical activity, sexual intercourse, and any activities that may put strain on the surgical site for a few weeks post-surgery.
5. Signs of Infection: Be vigilant for signs of infection, which can include increased redness, swelling, warmth, pus or discharge, and fever. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
6. Follow-Up Appointments: Ensure you attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns.
In conclusion, while some redness and minor bleeding can be normal after circumcision, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Your health and comfort during the recovery process are paramount, and your medical team is there to support you.
