Post-Operative Low-Grade Fever After Humerus Fracture Surgery: Is It Normal? - Orthopedics

Postoperative care for humeral fracture?

Hello, doctor.
I underwent a reduction surgery for a humeral fracture on August 15, during which a titanium alloy plate was implanted.
The wound has been treated with self-paying tissue adhesive and non-removable sutures.
The doctor prescribed Ultracet to be taken four times a day.
It has been six days post-surgery, and I started experiencing a low-grade fever (<38°C) yesterday, mostly hovering around 37.5°C.
My arm continues to show signs of reduced swelling without any indications of returning swelling or pain.
I also have some abrasions from a car accident that I have been changing dressings for daily at the clinic.
I would like to ask if this low-grade fever is normal.
My family suggests that it might be due to the air conditioning being too cold, possibly causing a cold.
Aside from the elevated body temperature, I do not have any other significant discomfort.

Post-operative low-grade fever can be a common occurrence following surgical procedures, including humerus fracture surgery. In your case, having undergone surgery on August 15 and experiencing a low-grade fever (below 38°C) around six days post-operation is generally considered normal. This is particularly true if you are not exhibiting other concerning symptoms such as significant swelling, redness, or pain at the surgical site, which could indicate an infection.

After surgery, the body undergoes a healing process that can involve inflammation, which may lead to an increase in body temperature. This is part of the body's natural response to trauma and surgery, as it works to repair tissues and combat any potential infections. The presence of a low-grade fever, especially if it hovers around 37.5°C, is often a sign that your body is responding appropriately to the surgical intervention.

It is also important to consider other factors that may contribute to a low-grade fever. For instance, the use of certain medications, such as Ultracet, can sometimes lead to mild elevations in temperature. Additionally, environmental factors, such as being in a cold air-conditioned room, could potentially cause discomfort or a slight increase in body temperature, although this is less likely to be the primary cause of a fever.

In your situation, since you mentioned that your arm is continuing to reduce in swelling and there are no signs of infection, it is reasonable to monitor your temperature and overall condition. Staying hydrated and resting are essential components of recovery. If the fever persists or if you develop other symptoms such as chills, increased pain, or any unusual discharge from the surgical site, it would be prudent to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, a low-grade fever after humerus fracture surgery is often a normal part of the healing process. However, continuous monitoring of your symptoms and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider is crucial to ensure a smooth recovery. If you have any concerns or if your condition changes, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
