There are sounds coming from the appendix?

Hello, doctor.
It has been a month and a half since my appendectomy, and occasionally I feel a "bubbling" sensation at the surgical site, similar to passing gas, but it originates from the area of the appendectomy.
Is this a normal phenomenon? Should I return for a follow-up to check the wound? Thank you.

Ruima, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/09/08

Dr. Chen Jiaming reply Surgery

This is caused by adhesions in the lower right abdomen due to appendicitis, which makes it difficult for the small intestine to navigate through this area.
This results in the audible bowel sounds.
There is no need to be overly concerned, as it generally improves gradually over time.

Hearing unusual sounds or sensations from a surgical site, such as the "bubbling" or "gurgling" feeling you describe from your appendectomy site, can be concerning. However, it is not uncommon for patients to experience various sensations after abdominal surgery, including sounds that may resemble gas moving through the intestines.
After an appendectomy, the body undergoes a healing process that can involve changes in the way the intestines function. The sensation you are experiencing could be due to several factors:
1. Normal Post-Surgical Healing: After surgery, the intestines may take some time to return to their normal function. During this period, you might hear sounds as gas and fluids move through the intestines. This is often referred to as "borborygmi," which is the medical term for the rumbling or gurgling noises made by the movement of fluid and gas in the intestines.

2. Changes in Bowel Function: Surgery can temporarily alter bowel function. You may experience increased or decreased bowel sounds, and the sensation of gas moving can be more pronounced as your body adjusts.

3. Scar Tissue Formation: As the surgical site heals, scar tissue may form, which can sometimes affect how the intestines move and function. This can lead to unusual sensations or sounds.

4. Infection or Complications: While less common, it is important to be aware that unusual sounds or sensations could also indicate complications, such as an infection or an issue with the healing process. Signs of infection may include increased pain, swelling, redness, or discharge from the surgical site.

Given that it has been a month and a half since your surgery, if the sensation is not accompanied by any other concerning symptoms (such as fever, severe pain, or changes in bowel habits), it may be a normal part of your recovery. However, if you are feeling uncertain or if the sensations become more pronounced or are accompanied by other symptoms, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and, if necessary, imaging studies to ensure that everything is healing properly.

In summary, while the sounds you are hearing may be a normal part of the healing process after your appendectomy, it is always best to consult with your doctor if you have any concerns. They can provide reassurance and ensure that your recovery is on track.
