Premarital Health Checkup
Hello, I would like to ask if both partners are required to attend the premarital health check together? What are the costs involved? Does the Keelung government or health insurance provide any subsidies? What are the typical items included in the examination? Thank you.

1.
Pre-marital health check-ups do not necessarily require couples to attend together, but it is recommended to register and pay as a couple; this is because our hospital encourages couple check-ups and offers discounts for this.
2.
There is no subsidy from the government health insurance.
3.
Basic examination items for males: physician consultation, general physical examination, blood tests, urine tests, hepatitis B and C, AIDS, syphilis, electrocardiogram (ECG), chest X-ray, and thalassemia.

More Info
Pre-marital health checks are an essential step for couples planning to marry, as they help identify any potential health issues that could affect future pregnancies or the overall health of both partners. In response to your inquiry regarding the necessity of both partners attending the check-up, the costs involved, potential subsidies from the government or health insurance, and the typical examination items included, here’s a comprehensive overview.
Attendance of Both Partners
While it is not strictly mandatory for both partners to attend the pre-marital health check together, it is highly recommended. This is because many tests are designed to assess compatibility in terms of genetic conditions, infectious diseases, and overall health status that could impact both partners and any future children. Attending together also allows for immediate discussions with healthcare providers about any concerns or questions that may arise during the examination.
Costs of the Health Check
The cost of pre-marital health checks can vary significantly depending on the healthcare facility and the specific tests included. As indicated in previous responses, the typical range for such checks is between 1,000 to 3,000 NTD (New Taiwan Dollar), depending on the individual needs and the extent of the tests performed. It is advisable to contact the specific hospital or clinic for a detailed breakdown of costs and to inquire about any package deals they may offer.
Government or Health Insurance Subsidies
In Taiwan, there may be limited subsidies available for pre-marital health checks through the government or health insurance, but this can vary by region and specific circumstances. It is best to check with local health authorities or the National Health Insurance Administration to determine if any subsidies apply to your situation. Some hospitals may also offer discounts for students or specific groups, so it’s worth inquiring about any available promotions.
Typical Examination Items
The typical items included in a pre-marital health check often encompass a range of tests aimed at assessing both partners' health. Common tests may include:
1. Physical Examination: General health assessment, including height, weight, and vital signs.
2. Blood Tests:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC)
- Blood type and Rh factor
- Tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B and C.
- Rubella immunity test (especially important for women).
3. Urinalysis: To check for any underlying kidney issues or infections.
4. Thyroid Function Tests: To assess thyroid health, which can impact overall well-being.
5. Genetic Screening: Depending on family history, tests for conditions like thalassemia or sickle cell disease may be recommended.
6. Imaging Tests: In some cases, a chest X-ray may be required to rule out any lung issues.
Conclusion
In summary, while both partners are not required to attend the pre-marital health check together, it is advisable for effective communication and understanding of health implications. The costs can range from 1,000 to 3,000 NTD, and potential subsidies should be verified with local health authorities. The examination typically includes a variety of tests aimed at ensuring both partners are in good health and to identify any potential risks that could affect future pregnancies. It is always best to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and to ensure all necessary tests are conducted.
