Fast Heartbeat and Left Arm Numbness: Should You Get Vaccinated? - Cardiology

Rapid heartbeat, numbness in the left arm, heaviness in the head, and tingling sensations throughout the body?

Hello, doctor.
I have a question.
This year, I started experiencing numbness in my left hand, and I occasionally feel a slight pressure pain in my left chest.
Sometimes, I also have a heavy head or dizziness.
Recently, my heart rate has increased, but I measure my blood pressure daily, and it remains stable.
However, my heart rate is between 80 and 90 beats per minute.
In the morning, my blood pressure is normal, but my heart rate is between 75 and 80.
Is this normal? I tend to be more anxious, and I drink coffee and go to bed late.
I have also recently scheduled to receive the BNT vaccine.
Given my current condition, is it safe for me to get vaccinated? Thank you.

Dr. He Dongjin reply Cardiology

Hello, my left hand feels numb, and I suspect it might be a peripheral nerve issue.
My heart rate is between 80-90, which seems normal.
Stress, coffee consumption, and staying up late can lead to autonomic nervous system dysregulation, causing an increased heart rate.
It's best to adjust my lifestyle first, as it shouldn't have a significant impact.
I can receive the BNT vaccine.

When considering the symptoms you've described—left arm numbness, mild chest discomfort, and an increased heart rate—it's essential to approach the situation with caution. While your blood pressure readings are stable and within normal limits, the combination of symptoms you are experiencing could indicate a range of underlying issues, some of which may require medical attention.

Firstly, the left arm numbness and chest discomfort can be concerning, especially if they are recurrent. These symptoms can sometimes be associated with cardiovascular issues, such as angina or even more serious conditions like a heart attack, particularly if they occur during physical activity or stress. However, given your age and the fact that you have been evaluated previously without significant findings, it is less likely that these symptoms are due to a severe cardiac condition. Other potential causes could include anxiety, which can manifest as physical symptoms such as palpitations and numbness, especially in individuals who identify as "nervous types."
Regarding your heart rate, a resting heart rate of 75-80 beats per minute is generally considered normal, though it can vary based on factors such as stress, caffeine intake, and overall fitness level. It’s important to note that caffeine can stimulate the heart and lead to increased heart rates and feelings of anxiety, which may exacerbate your symptoms. If you consume caffeine regularly, it might be beneficial to reduce your intake, especially if you are feeling anxious or experiencing palpitations.

As for your upcoming BNT vaccination, it is generally safe for individuals with mild symptoms like those you described, especially if you have stable vital signs and no significant underlying health issues. Vaccination is crucial for preventing severe illness from COVID-19, and the benefits typically outweigh the risks, even for those with mild anxiety or transient symptoms. However, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider before proceeding with vaccination, particularly if you have concerns about your symptoms.

In summary, while your symptoms may not indicate a severe cardiac issue, they warrant monitoring and possibly further evaluation by a healthcare professional. It would be wise to discuss your symptoms with your doctor, especially in the context of your upcoming vaccination. They may recommend further tests or a referral to a specialist if necessary. Meanwhile, consider lifestyle modifications such as reducing caffeine, managing stress through relaxation techniques, and ensuring adequate sleep, as these can significantly impact your overall well-being and may help alleviate some of your symptoms.
