Pain in the left lower rib cage?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about a pain I am experiencing on the left side of my abdomen (the left side of my stomach).
I feel a dull pain when I breathe or take a deep breath, and it is more noticeable during deep inhalation.
It feels similar to a muscle strain, but I can't pinpoint the exact location of the pain.
Coughing or moving does not seem to cause significant discomfort.
I am unsure what the issue might be.
I recently had a chest X-ray, and it showed no problems.
Could you please provide some insight? Thank you.

Dr. Yang Wenda reply Pulmonology
Hello: If the chest X-ray is normal, common lung diseases such as pneumonia, pleural effusion, or pneumothorax can generally be ruled out.
Based on your symptoms, it is possible that you are experiencing neuralgia, which may be related to stress or consuming excessively cold foods.
Please pay attention to adjusting your daily routine and diet!

More Info
Left side rib pain can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its potential causes is essential for determining whether medical attention is necessary. Given your description of the pain being more pronounced during deep breaths and the absence of pain during coughing or movement, there are several possibilities to consider.
Possible Causes of Left Side Rib Pain
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: One of the most common causes of rib pain is musculoskeletal strain. This could be due to muscle strain or injury, especially if you've engaged in activities that require heavy lifting or twisting motions. The pain you feel during deep breaths could be due to the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs) being strained.
2. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It can cause localized pain that may worsen with deep breathing or certain movements. The pain is often sharp and can mimic the sensation of a rib injury.
3. Pleural Issues: Although you mentioned that a recent chest X-ray showed no issues, conditions affecting the pleura (the lining around the lungs) can cause pain that is exacerbated by deep breathing. Conditions such as pleuritis (inflammation of the pleura) can lead to sharp pain during inhalation.
4. Gastrointestinal Causes: Since you mentioned that the pain is located near the stomach, gastrointestinal issues such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, or even splenic issues could be contributing to your discomfort. Sometimes, referred pain from the stomach or spleen can manifest as rib pain.
5. Nerve-Related Pain: Conditions such as shingles (herpes zoster) can cause pain in the rib area, often accompanied by a rash. Even without a rash, nerve irritation or compression could lead to pain that feels like it is coming from the ribs.
When to Seek Medical Advice
While some rib pain can be benign and self-limiting, there are specific circumstances under which you should seek medical attention:
- Persistent or Worsening Pain: If the pain does not improve or worsens over time, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
- Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as fever, difficulty breathing, or significant changes in your overall health, you should seek immediate medical attention.
- History of Trauma: If you have had any recent trauma or injury to the area, even if it seems minor, it is wise to get evaluated to rule out fractures or other injuries.
- Gastrointestinal Symptoms: If you experience nausea, vomiting, or changes in bowel habits along with the rib pain, this could indicate a gastrointestinal issue that requires evaluation.
Conclusion
In summary, left side rib pain can arise from various causes, ranging from musculoskeletal issues to gastrointestinal problems. Given that your recent chest X-ray was normal, it may be less likely that a serious condition is present, but persistent or worsening symptoms warrant further investigation. If the pain continues or you develop new symptoms, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management.
