There is a small flesh-colored bump in the center of the nipple?
Hello Doctor: After taking a shower and during exercise, I experienced pain when my left nipple was rubbed.
Upon checking in the mirror, I noticed a small growth in the center of the nipple that seems like a tiny polyp.
It hurts when touched and there was a little bit of bleeding, but no discharge.
I would like to know if this could be related to breast cancer or if it is just a surface issue with the skin of the nipple.
Thank you!

This situation appears to be more consistent with a benign condition; however, if possible, it is advisable to remove the polyp on the nipple and perform a biopsy for further evaluation.

When it comes to painful nodules on the nipple, it is essential to approach the situation with a clear understanding of potential causes and concerns. The presence of a painful nodule, especially one that causes discomfort and minor bleeding, can understandably lead to anxiety about serious conditions such as breast cancer. However, it is important to note that not all nodules or growths in the breast area are indicative of cancer.
There are several possible causes for the painful nodule you described:
1. Fibroadenomas: These are benign tumors made up of glandular and connective tissue. They are typically painless but can sometimes cause discomfort if they are pressing against surrounding tissues.
2. Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs in the breast can develop and may become painful, especially if they are large or if they rupture.
3. Infections or Abscesses: An infection in the breast tissue can lead to the formation of a painful lump, often accompanied by redness, swelling, and sometimes fever. If the infection progresses, it can lead to an abscess, which may require drainage.
4. Nipple Dermatitis or Eczema: Skin conditions affecting the nipple area can cause irritation and pain. This can be due to allergic reactions, irritants, or underlying skin conditions.
5. Paget's Disease of the Nipple: This is a rare form of breast cancer that typically presents with changes in the skin and appearance of the nipple. Symptoms may include itching, redness, and a scaly texture.
6. Trauma or Friction: As you mentioned that the pain occurred after showering or exercising, it is possible that friction or trauma to the nipple area could cause localized pain and irritation, leading to the formation of a nodule.
Given the symptoms you described—pain, a visible nodule, and minor bleeding—it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination, which may include imaging studies such as a mammogram or ultrasound, and possibly a biopsy if there is concern about malignancy.
Breast cancer is often associated with specific signs, such as a hard lump, changes in breast shape or size, or persistent changes in the skin or nipple. However, early detection is key, and any new or unusual changes in the breast should be evaluated promptly.
In summary, while the presence of a painful nodule on the nipple can be concerning, it does not automatically indicate breast cancer. Many benign conditions can cause similar symptoms. It is essential to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment. Remember, early evaluation and intervention can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
