Right nipple lump, painful upon pressure?

Hello, doctor.
About a week ago, I started experiencing mild pain around my right nipple, specifically the entire areola.
When I touch it, it feels slightly swollen, and I can feel a round hard lump that seems to be part of the areola itself.
However, there are no similar symptoms on the left side.
I would like to know if this could be gynecomastia, as I researched and it seems unlikely for my age, or could it be inflammation? Thank you.

Acan, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/11/09

I don't think it resembles the issue of gynecomastia.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the pain and swelling around your right nipple. It’s understandable to be concerned about any changes in your body, especially when it comes to sensitive areas like the breast.

Based on your description, there are several potential causes for the symptoms you are experiencing. The first thing to consider is that localized pain and swelling in the breast area can be due to a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, infections, or even benign conditions.

1. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations can lead to breast tenderness and swelling. This is often seen in men during puberty or as a result of hormonal imbalances later in life. While gynecomastia (the development of breast tissue in males) is more common in younger individuals, it can occur at any age due to various factors, including hormonal changes, certain medications, or underlying health conditions.

2. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions such as mastitis (an infection of the breast tissue) can cause localized pain, swelling, and tenderness. Although mastitis is more commonly associated with women, it can occur in men as well, particularly if there is an underlying issue such as a blocked duct or skin infection.

3. Benign Breast Conditions: Other benign conditions, such as cysts or fibroadenomas, can also present as lumps or swelling in the breast area. These are usually non-cancerous and can be monitored or treated if necessary.

4. Trauma or Injury: If you have experienced any trauma to the area, even minor, it could lead to localized swelling and pain. This could be due to a bruise or inflammation in response to injury.

5. Cancer: While less common, any new lump or persistent pain should be evaluated to rule out the possibility of breast cancer, even in men. It’s important to note that breast cancer in men is rare, but it can occur, particularly in older age groups or those with a family history of breast cancer.

Given that you have noticed a hard lump and swelling, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or mammogram, to assess the area further.
In the meantime, it’s important to monitor your symptoms. If you experience any additional symptoms such as fever, significant changes in the lump, or if the pain worsens, seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while your symptoms could be related to benign conditions or hormonal changes, it is essential to get a proper diagnosis from a healthcare provider to ensure that any serious conditions are ruled out. Early evaluation and intervention can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind. Thank you for reaching out, and I hope you find relief soon!
