Hemorrhoid ligation
I underwent hemorrhoid ligation surgery last Friday, November 12th.
Yesterday and today, I noticed a small amount of what seems to be blood clots and bleeding, but it appears that the rubber band has not fallen off.
Is this normal? Thank you.

After undergoing hemorrhoid ligation, it takes 1-2 weeks for the tissue to undergo fibrosis and detach.
During this period, there may be slight bleeding and swelling.
It is usually recommended to use suppositories and take warm sitz baths.
If symptoms gradually improve, there is no need for concern; just return for follow-up at the scheduled time.

More Info
After undergoing hemorrhoid ligation, it is not uncommon to notice some blood or blood clots in the days following the procedure. Hemorrhoid ligation, also known as rubber band ligation, involves placing a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply, causing it to shrink and eventually fall off. This process can lead to some post-operative bleeding as the tissue heals.
In the first few days after the procedure, it is normal to experience some bleeding or spotting, especially if the ligated hemorrhoid is still intact. The presence of small blood clots can also occur as the body begins to heal and the ligated hemorrhoid may start to break down. However, if the bleeding is excessive or if you notice large clots, it is essential to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
The rubber band typically falls off within a week or two after the procedure, and during this time, the area may be sensitive and prone to minor bleeding. It is crucial to monitor the situation closely. If the bleeding persists, increases, or is accompanied by severe pain, fever, or other concerning symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly.
In terms of post-operative care, it is recommended to maintain good hygiene in the anal area, avoid straining during bowel movements, and consider using stool softeners to minimize discomfort. Additionally, over-the-counter pain relief medications can help manage any discomfort you may experience.
In summary, seeing some blood or small blood clots after hemorrhoid ligation can be normal as part of the healing process. However, if you have any concerns about the amount of bleeding or if you experience any unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They can provide reassurance and ensure that your recovery is on track.
