Post-Surgery Concerns After Septoplasty: What You Need to Know - Otolaryngology

Post-operative issues following septoplasty?

Hello, doctor.
I have seen many postoperative educational pamphlets from various hospitals that mostly state that if there is blood reflux in the throat, one should not swallow it but rather cough it out.
However, I often unconsciously swallow foreign substances in my throat while sleeping at night.
I would like to ask if swallowing refluxed nasal blood or packing material would have any adverse effects.
Additionally, is it normal to experience dizziness, forehead pain, and ear pain due to pressure issues after surgery? After two to three days post-surgery, can I return to my usual sleeping position instead of maintaining a 45-60 degree angle? Thank you, doctor.

s, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/12/13

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: Swallowing a small amount of blood clots, secretions, or absorbable packing materials will generally be digested and absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract, and there should be no major issues.
Post-operative care details may vary slightly among surgeons, so it is recommended to discuss directly with the operating physician.
If you experience any discomfort, it is advisable to return for a check-up sooner.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Post-surgery concerns after a septoplasty are quite common, and it’s important to address them to ensure a smooth recovery. Septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated septum, which can improve airflow through the nasal passages and alleviate symptoms such as nasal obstruction, snoring, and sinus infections. Here are some key points to consider regarding your concerns:
1. Swallowing Blood or Packing Material: It is generally advised to avoid swallowing blood or packing material that may flow back into the throat after surgery. Swallowing small amounts of blood is usually not harmful, as the stomach can handle it, but it can lead to nausea or an upset stomach. If you find yourself swallowing packing material, it’s best to contact your surgeon for guidance. They may recommend monitoring the situation or possibly adjusting your post-operative care to prevent this from happening.

2. Post-operative Symptoms: Experiencing headaches, dizziness, and ear pain after septoplasty can be normal due to several factors. The surgery can cause swelling and pressure changes in the nasal passages, which may lead to referred pain in the forehead and ears. Additionally, the anesthesia and the body’s healing process can contribute to these sensations. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen, it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider to rule out any complications.

3. Sleeping Position: After septoplasty, it is typically recommended to maintain an elevated position while sleeping for the first few days to reduce swelling and promote drainage. This is usually advised for about 45-60 degrees. After the initial recovery period, which can vary from patient to patient, you may gradually return to your normal sleeping position. However, it’s essential to listen to your body and follow your surgeon’s specific recommendations regarding when it’s safe to do so.

4. Recovery Timeline: The recovery process after septoplasty can vary widely among individuals. Most patients can expect to return to normal activities within a week or two, but complete healing may take several weeks. During this time, it’s important to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and blowing your nose, as these can disrupt the healing process.

5. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon are crucial to monitor your recovery. They can assess the healing of your nasal passages, address any concerns you may have, and provide guidance on managing symptoms. If you experience significant pain, persistent bleeding, or any signs of infection (such as fever or increased swelling), it’s important to seek medical attention promptly.

In summary, while some post-operative symptoms after septoplasty can be normal, it’s essential to stay vigilant and communicate with your healthcare provider about any concerns. Following post-operative instructions carefully and attending follow-up appointments will help ensure a successful recovery. If you have any further questions or experience unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out to your surgeon for personalized advice.
