Post-Vaccine Concerns: Chest Pain After BNT Shot - Internal Medicine

Questions regarding post-vaccination issues?

Hello, I received my second dose of the BNT vaccine on December 6th, and my first dose was the AZ vaccine in September.
I experienced a fever after the first dose, but I didn't have any significant reactions after the second dose.
However, just now, while lying on my right side, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in the center of my chest for about 3-5 seconds.
I'm not sure if it was bone pain, as I also felt some discomfort in my right shoulder area.
Now, the pain has subsided, and my breathing and heart rate are normal.
I'm unsure if this could be a symptom of myocarditis; I remember hearing that it occurs more often in males.
I recall seeing a paper from the clinic after vaccination that mentioned symptoms like chest tightness and chest pain.
I'm wondering if my experience fits those criteria or if I should visit the hospital if I experience any symptoms.
My sister mentioned that it might be related to my lying position, but I'm still a bit concerned since I've heard news reports about this.
Thank you for your response.

Hello, the chest pain you described due to a change in posture is not typically a symptom of myocarditis; it is usually caused by muscle or bone strain.
If it were myocarditis, the chest pain would be persistent and accompanied by shortness of breath.
It is advisable to monitor the situation.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info

After receiving the BNT vaccine, experiencing chest pain can understandably cause concern, especially given the recent discussions surrounding vaccine-related side effects. It’s important to approach this situation with a clear understanding of what might be happening and when to seek medical attention.

Firstly, it’s essential to recognize that mild side effects after vaccination, such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue, and mild fever, are common and usually resolve within a few days. However, chest pain, particularly if it is sudden and sharp, warrants careful consideration. In your case, the pain you experienced while lying on your side for a few seconds could be related to several factors, including muscle strain, positional discomfort, or even anxiety.
Chest pain can arise from various sources, including musculoskeletal issues, gastrointestinal problems, or cardiac concerns. Given that you mentioned the pain was accompanied by discomfort in your shoulder, it could suggest a musculoskeletal origin, such as a muscle strain or tension in the chest wall. This type of pain is often exacerbated by certain positions or movements and can be transient, as you described.

Regarding the concern about myocarditis or pericarditis, which have been reported as rare side effects following mRNA vaccinations (like BNT), it is crucial to note that these conditions typically present with more persistent symptoms, such as ongoing chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations. If your symptoms resolve quickly and you do not experience any additional concerning symptoms (like difficulty breathing or a rapid heart rate), it is less likely that you are experiencing myocarditis.
However, it is always better to err on the side of caution. If you experience recurrent chest pain, especially if it lasts longer than a few minutes, or if you develop new symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or a rapid heartbeat, you should seek medical attention promptly.
In terms of your question about whether this aligns with the side effects listed on the information sheet provided after vaccination, it is indeed possible that transient chest discomfort could be mentioned, but it is essential to differentiate between expected mild side effects and symptoms that could indicate a more serious condition.

If you are feeling anxious about your symptoms, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly an electrocardiogram (ECG) or other tests, to rule out any serious issues.
Lastly, regarding your concern about the frequency of vaccinations and their potential cumulative effects, while receiving multiple vaccines within a short time frame can lead to increased side effects, each individual's response can vary significantly. It is advisable to discuss your vaccination history and any concerns with your healthcare provider, especially if you plan to receive additional vaccines, such as the flu shot.

In summary, while transient chest pain after vaccination can be common and often benign, persistent or severe symptoms should not be ignored. Always prioritize your health and seek medical advice if you are uncertain about your symptoms.
