Delayed menstruation and frequent urination?
On December 10, my period started, and I have not had my period by January 8.
I have had sexual intercourse within this month, and I am experiencing increased urinary frequency, which persists from morning until bedtime, causing difficulty sleeping.
I am currently taking psychiatric medications, including Urotherapy (for depression) and Anxiolytic (sleep aid).
I took four home pregnancy tests on January 7 and January 8, and all showed one line.
Is there a possibility of pregnancy?
Xiao Jun, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/01/08
Dr. Lin Xinwang reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, Hsiao-Chun: 1.
After sexual intercourse, take a pregnancy test again between 14 to 28 days later.
If the result is negative and you still have concerns, test again the following week.
2.
The issue of frequent urination may indicate a urinary tract infection; please visit a gynecologist for a consultation.

More Info
Frequent urination and a missed period can indeed raise the suspicion of pregnancy, but it is essential to consider various factors before jumping to conclusions. In your case, since you have had sexual intercourse within the month and are experiencing increased urination, it is reasonable to consider the possibility of pregnancy. However, the negative pregnancy tests you conducted on January 7 and 8, which showed only one line, suggest that you may not be pregnant, as a positive test typically shows two lines.
Frequent urination can occur for several reasons, including pregnancy, urinary tract infections (UTIs), diabetes, or even side effects from medications. Given that you are taking psychiatric medications, it is crucial to consider whether these could be contributing to your symptoms. Some medications can affect fluid retention and urination patterns, potentially leading to increased frequency.
In terms of your menstrual cycle, if your period is late, it could be due to various factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, or the effects of medication. Stress and anxiety can significantly impact menstrual cycles, leading to missed periods or irregular cycles. If you are experiencing heightened anxiety or stress related to your mental health condition, this could also contribute to your missed period.
If you continue to experience frequent urination and your period does not arrive soon, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a more sensitive pregnancy test, such as a blood test, which can detect pregnancy earlier than home urine tests. Additionally, they can evaluate your symptoms further to rule out other potential causes of frequent urination, such as a UTI or other underlying health issues.
In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given your sexual activity and missed period, the negative home pregnancy tests suggest that you may not be pregnant. Frequent urination can be attributed to various factors, including medication side effects, stress, or other medical conditions. It is essential to follow up with a healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation and to address any concerns you may have regarding your menstrual cycle and urinary symptoms. They can provide you with the appropriate guidance and support based on your individual health needs.
