Postoperative care for sleep apnea?
Hello Doctor: I recently underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and tonsillectomy five days ago due to long-term obstructive sleep apnea issues.
My postoperative recovery has been slow, and I am currently unable to swallow regular food (I still cannot swallow cold liquids like porridge).
I have purchased a dietary supplement called "Yishan" from the pharmacy, which is high in protein and vitamins to promote wound healing.
However, I noticed that it contains curcumin, and I would like to know if its use is not recommended? (The pharmacy indicated that this product is safe to use after surgery.)

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello: Some studies suggest that turmeric has anticoagulant effects, and it is recommended to start using it two weeks post-surgery for safety, or to choose other health supplements that do not contain turmeric.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Post-operative care following surgery for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is crucial for recovery and overall health. After undergoing procedures such as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and tonsillectomy, patients often experience challenges related to nutrition, pain management, and sleep quality. Here’s a comprehensive overview of nutritional guidance and concerns for patients recovering from such surgeries.
Nutritional Guidance
1. Soft Diet: In the immediate post-operative period, patients may have difficulty swallowing solid foods due to swelling and discomfort in the throat. It is advisable to stick to a soft diet that includes items like applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. These foods are easier to swallow and less likely to irritate the surgical site.
2. Hydration: Staying hydrated is essential for recovery. Patients should aim to drink plenty of fluids, preferably water, herbal teas, or clear broths. Avoiding caffeinated and alcoholic beverages is recommended as they can lead to dehydration.
3. High-Protein Foods: Protein is vital for healing. Incorporating high-protein foods such as eggs, dairy products, and protein shakes can help support tissue repair. If solid foods are difficult to consume, protein supplements can be beneficial.
4. Vitamins and Minerals: Adequate intake of vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin C and zinc, can enhance healing. These nutrients can be found in fruits, vegetables, and fortified foods. If dietary intake is insufficient, a multivitamin may be considered.
5. Avoiding Irritants: Spicy, acidic, or very hot foods should be avoided as they can irritate the throat and exacerbate discomfort.
Concerns Regarding Supplements
Regarding the use of the supplement "益膳" (which contains curcumin), there are a few considerations:
1. Curcumin and Blood Thinning: Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has been noted for its anti-inflammatory properties but can also have blood-thinning effects. Post-surgery, especially after procedures involving the throat, it is crucial to avoid any substances that might increase the risk of bleeding. Therefore, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplements.
2. Timing of Supplement Use: If the supplement is deemed safe by a healthcare professional, it may be wise to wait at least two weeks post-surgery before introducing it. This allows the body to stabilize and reduces the risk of complications.
3. Monitoring for Allergies or Reactions: If you decide to use any new supplement, monitor for any adverse reactions, especially since the body may be more sensitive post-surgery.
Conclusion
In summary, post-operative care after OSA surgery involves careful attention to nutrition and hydration to promote healing. A soft diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals is essential, while avoiding irritants is crucial for comfort. Regarding the use of supplements like curcumin, it is best to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure safety and appropriateness in the context of your recovery. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team to address any concerns and optimize your recovery process.
