Menstrual issues
Around December 23 was when my period was supposed to arrive, but it hasn't come yet.
On January 29, after unprotected intercourse, I took emergency contraception and bought a pregnancy test, but I had unprotected intercourse again that night (both instances of unprotected intercourse were brief).
On the morning of January 30, I used the pregnancy test, but it only showed one line.
As of now, February 6, my period still hasn't arrived.
Could this be irregular menstruation, or is there a possibility of pregnancy?
yu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/02/06
Dr. Huang Zifei reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dear Fish,
The possibility of pregnancy cannot be ruled out.
It is recommended to visit an obstetrician-gynecologist for another test.
If pregnancy is not confirmed, the doctor can prescribe medication to induce menstruation as needed.

When it comes to missed periods, the question of whether it is due to irregularities in the menstrual cycle or a potential pregnancy is a common concern among many women. In your case, you mentioned that your expected period around December 23 did not occur, and you had unprotected intercourse on January 29, followed by taking emergency contraception. You also tested for pregnancy on January 30, which returned a negative result. Now, as of February 6, your period still has not arrived.
First, it is important to understand that menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and lifestyle factors. Irregular periods can occur even in women who typically have regular cycles. The use of emergency contraception can also affect your menstrual cycle. Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) can cause changes in your next period, including delaying it or causing it to be lighter or heavier than usual.
Given that you had unprotected intercourse shortly before taking the emergency contraception, there is a possibility of pregnancy, although the likelihood is reduced due to the timing of your actions. The emergency contraceptive pill is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, ideally within 72 hours. Since you took it on January 29, it would have been effective in reducing the chance of pregnancy from that encounter.
The negative pregnancy test on January 30 is also a significant indicator. Pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, as they measure the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Since you tested just a day after your expected period, it is possible that the hormone levels were not high enough to detect if you were pregnant.
However, since your period has still not arrived as of February 6, it is advisable to wait a few more days and then retest for pregnancy. If your period does not come within a week of your missed period, consider taking another home pregnancy test or consulting with a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can provide more definitive results.
In summary, while it is possible that your missed period is due to irregularities or the effects of emergency contraception, there remains a small possibility of pregnancy. Monitoring your symptoms and retesting in a few days will provide more clarity. If you continue to experience irregularities or have concerns about your menstrual health, seeking advice from a healthcare professional is always a good step. They can provide personalized guidance and support based on your specific situation.
