Missed menstruation?
Hello doctor, my menstrual periods were on May 29, June 25, and July 22.
I had unprotected intercourse with my boyfriend on the night of August 2, and I bought emergency contraception the next morning.
I experienced bleeding from August 7 to August 12, and then I had another light bleeding from August 21 to August 24, which was about the amount of two panty liners in one day.
Since then, I haven't had my period.
Could this be a sign that my menstrual cycle is irregular, or is there a possibility that I could be pregnant?
Yueyue, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/09/16

Based on your description, it seems more like irregular menstruation.
I recommend taking a pregnancy test for more certainty.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
When it comes to missed periods, the possibility of pregnancy versus irregular menstrual cycles is a common concern for many women. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down the situation and explore the potential implications.
Firstly, it's important to understand that a missed period can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, changes in weight, and, of course, pregnancy. In your case, you mentioned having unprotected intercourse on August 2nd and subsequently taking emergency contraception (the morning-after pill). Emergency contraception is designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex, but it is not 100% effective. The effectiveness of these pills is highest when taken as soon as possible after intercourse, ideally within 72 hours.
After taking the emergency contraception, you experienced some bleeding from August 7th to August 12th, which could be a side effect of the medication. This bleeding is often referred to as "withdrawal bleeding" and can be similar to a menstrual period. However, it does not necessarily indicate that you are not pregnant. Following that, you reported another episode of light bleeding from August 21st to August 24th. This could also be related to the hormonal changes caused by the emergency contraception.
Given that you have not had a period since then, it is possible that your menstrual cycle has been disrupted due to the hormonal fluctuations from taking the emergency contraception. It's not uncommon for women to experience irregular cycles after using such medications, as they can temporarily alter the normal hormonal balance in the body.
To determine whether you might be pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. If you take a test and it shows a positive result, it would indicate that you are likely pregnant. If the test is negative and you still do not get your period, it may be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, while it is possible that you could be pregnant, especially given the timing of your unprotected intercourse, the irregular bleeding you experienced could also be a result of the emergency contraception. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy or if your period does not return, I recommend scheduling an appointment with a healthcare provider. They can offer a more comprehensive evaluation, including a blood test for pregnancy, and help you understand your menstrual cycle better.
In the meantime, keep track of any other symptoms you may experience, such as breast tenderness, nausea, or fatigue, as these can also provide clues regarding your pregnancy status. Remember, it's always best to consult with a medical professional for personalized advice and guidance tailored to your specific situation.
