Side effects of taking finasteride?
Due to having male pattern baldness (Type M), I started taking finasteride three months ago.
The results have been quite noticeable for me; my hair loss has significantly decreased, and I've even started to see some fine hairs growing.
However, the side effects have also been quite pronounced.
Since starting the medication, my libido has decreased, and the hardness and duration of my erections are not what they used to be.
I no longer experience morning erections, and now I also have issues with incomplete bladder emptying and post-void dribbling.
I feel the urge to urinate even with a small amount of urine, and my trips to the bathroom have become more frequent.
I would like to know if these urinary issues could also be side effects of the medication.
Should I stop taking it immediately?

More Info
Finasteride is a medication commonly used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). While it can be effective in reducing hair loss and promoting hair regrowth, it is also associated with a range of side effects, particularly related to sexual function and urinary health.
The side effects you are experiencing, including decreased libido, reduced erectile hardness and duration, and changes in urinary habits, are indeed documented side effects of Finasteride. The mechanism behind these side effects is primarily related to the drug's action on the androgen system. Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a more potent androgen that plays a significant role in hair loss and prostate enlargement. By reducing DHT levels, Finasteride can lead to hormonal changes that may affect sexual function and urinary patterns.
Specifically, the urinary symptoms you are describing—such as a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, increased frequency of urination, and post-void dribbling—can be attributed to the medication's effects on the prostate and bladder. Finasteride can alter the size of the prostate and its relationship to the bladder, potentially leading to changes in urinary flow and sensation. While it is primarily prescribed to alleviate urinary symptoms associated with BPH, in some cases, it can paradoxically lead to urinary issues, especially in younger men or those without significant prostate enlargement.
Regarding your question about whether to stop taking Finasteride, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication regimen. Stopping the medication abruptly may lead to a return of hair loss and other symptoms associated with the underlying condition it was prescribed for. Your doctor can help assess the severity of your side effects and determine whether they are likely to improve with continued use or if an alternative treatment should be considered.
In addition to discussing your symptoms with your healthcare provider, it may be beneficial to explore lifestyle modifications that can support urinary health. Staying well-hydrated, practicing pelvic floor exercises, and avoiding bladder irritants (such as caffeine and alcohol) can help manage urinary symptoms. Furthermore, if sexual side effects persist, your doctor may consider adjusting the dosage or switching to a different treatment option that may have a more favorable side effect profile.
In summary, while Finasteride can be effective for treating hair loss, it is essential to be aware of its potential side effects, particularly concerning sexual and urinary health. Open communication with your healthcare provider is key to managing these side effects and finding the most appropriate treatment for your condition.
