Does Taking Finasteride Affect Prostate Health and Urinary Symptoms? - Urology

Is it possible that self-purchasing hair growth medication (such as Finasteride) could cause issues with prostate enlargement?

Hello, doctor.
I wanted to delay the hair loss crisis, so I purchased Finasteride and took it for about 2 to 3 months, but then I stopped.
Since Finasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, I would like to ask if taking this medication could have any effects on my body if I do not have any issues with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Additionally, I have noticed that my urine sometimes has bubbles, especially in the morning after waking up or if I haven’t urinated for a long time.
The urine color is not very dark, but the bubbles can last for 2 to 3 minutes before disappearing completely.
I went to the hospital for an examination, and the results showed no significant issues.
Is this considered normal? If I want to obtain more accurate data for evaluation, should I refrain from drinking or eating after a certain time the night before, or should I avoid urinating upon waking on the day of the appointment for better accuracy? Lastly, I have been experiencing intermittent pain in the area above my right lower back.
Is this region associated with the kidneys? If I want to determine the underlying issue, should I see a urologist or a nephrologist? I apologize for the many questions, as these issues have been troubling me for a long time.
I didn’t want to take up too much of the doctor’s time during my hospital visit, so I didn’t ask more questions.
Thank you for your help!

Hello: Additionally, any medication can have an impact (you can easily find this information online).
Discontinuing the medication will eliminate the effects.
For issues related to urination and lower back pain, you may consider consulting a nephrologist.

Finasteride is a medication primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern baldness. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to prostate growth and hair loss. While it is effective for these conditions, it can have various side effects, and its impact on prostate health and urinary symptoms is a topic of ongoing discussion.

Regarding your concerns about taking Finasteride without having BPH, it is important to note that while the medication is generally safe for most individuals, it can still lead to side effects, including sexual dysfunction, mood changes, and potential impacts on urinary symptoms. Some users report experiencing changes in libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation issues, which could indirectly affect urinary function. However, these side effects are not universally experienced and can vary significantly from person to person.

As for your urinary symptoms, such as the presence of bubbles in your urine, this can be attributed to several factors. Bubbles in urine can occur due to the presence of protein, which may indicate a condition known as proteinuria. However, if your medical tests have shown no significant issues, this may not be a cause for concern. It is also worth noting that urine can appear bubbly due to the force of urination or the presence of certain substances, such as soap or cleaning agents in the toilet bowl.
To obtain more accurate urine test results, it is generally recommended to avoid drinking fluids for several hours before the test. This helps concentrate the urine, making it easier to detect any abnormalities. Additionally, collecting a midstream sample (the urine collected after the initial flow) can provide a clearer picture of your urinary health.

Regarding your right flank pain, this area corresponds to the kidney region. Pain in this area can be associated with various conditions, including kidney stones, infections, or other renal issues. If you are experiencing persistent pain, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Depending on the symptoms and your medical history, you may be referred to either a urologist or a nephrologist. Urologists specialize in urinary tract issues and male reproductive health, while nephrologists focus on kidney function and diseases.

In summary, while Finasteride can have effects on prostate health and urinary symptoms, its impact varies among individuals. If you are experiencing concerning symptoms, it is essential to communicate these with your healthcare provider. They can help determine the best course of action, whether that involves adjusting your medication, conducting further tests, or referring you to a specialist. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team to ensure you receive the most appropriate care for your situation.
