Anxiety and worry

Recently, due to my physical condition and anxiety, I visited a psychosomatic specialist.
After starting medication, most of my symptoms have improved, but at times I find myself unconsciously believing that I am ill, which leads to both mental and physical discomfort, and some depression.
How can I manage this situation?

Dr. Xue Gengming reply Psychiatry

We recommend that you discuss the above situation further with your attending physician to determine if any additional examinations are necessary.
Thank you, and wishing you good health!

Managing anxiety and health concerns can be a challenging journey, especially when physical symptoms and mental health intertwine. It’s commendable that you’ve sought help from a mental health professional and have begun medication, which indicates a proactive approach to your well-being. Here are some strategies to further manage your anxiety and health concerns, along with insights into the underlying mechanisms that may be at play.

Understanding the Connection Between Mind and Body
Anxiety often manifests physically, leading to a cycle where physical symptoms exacerbate mental distress. This phenomenon is known as somatization, where psychological distress is expressed as physical symptoms. It’s essential to recognize that while your concerns about your health are valid, they can sometimes be magnified by anxiety. Understanding this connection can help you separate genuine health issues from anxiety-induced fears.

Cognitive Behavioral Techniques
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective approach for managing anxiety and health-related fears. It involves identifying and challenging irrational thoughts. For instance, when you find yourself thinking, "I must have a serious illness," try to counter that thought with evidence. Ask yourself questions like:
- What evidence do I have that supports this thought?
- What evidence contradicts it?
- What would I tell a friend in a similar situation?
Keeping a thought diary can help you track these patterns and gradually shift your thinking.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques
Incorporating mindfulness practices can significantly reduce anxiety. Mindfulness involves staying present and fully engaging with the moment without judgment. Techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery can help calm your mind and body. Apps like Headspace or Calm offer guided sessions that can be beneficial.

Physical Activity
Regular physical activity is a powerful tool for managing anxiety. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Activities like walking, yoga, or dancing can be particularly effective in reducing anxiety and improving overall mental health.

Social Support
Connecting with friends and family can provide emotional support and reduce feelings of isolation. Sharing your concerns with trusted individuals can help you gain perspective and reassurance. Consider joining a support group where you can share experiences with others facing similar challenges.

Professional Guidance
Since you’ve already consulted a mental health professional, it’s crucial to maintain that relationship. If you find that your medication is not adequately addressing your symptoms or if you experience side effects, discuss these concerns with your doctor. They may adjust your treatment plan or suggest alternative therapies, such as psychotherapy or lifestyle changes.

Self-Compassion
Be kind to yourself during this process. It’s normal to have setbacks and moments of doubt. Practicing self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend. Acknowledge your feelings without judgment and remind yourself that healing takes time.

Conclusion
Managing anxiety and health concerns is a multifaceted process that requires patience and persistence. By employing cognitive-behavioral strategies, engaging in mindfulness practices, maintaining physical activity, and seeking social support, you can create a robust framework for your mental well-being. Remember, it’s okay to seek help and take things one step at a time. Your journey towards mental wellness is valid, and with the right tools and support, you can navigate through these challenges effectively.
