Sudden pain in the left abdomen originating from within?
Today, after finishing dinner and going upstairs, I suddenly experienced severe pain in my left abdomen that came in waves, about ten waves in total, and then it stopped hurting.
I thought I might have stomach cancer because I've been having frequent diarrhea lately.
I'm not sure if it's due to stress or something else.
Occasionally, I would feel pain while eating, but it wasn't as intense as today.
Because of the ongoing diarrhea, I told my dad that I want to get an endoscopy and a colonoscopy, but he said to observe the situation and that there's no need to jump to conclusions right now.
So, I would like to ask if this wave-like severe pain in my left abdomen is serious or what kind of symptoms it might indicate.
I hope to convince him.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello, if the discomfort is in the upper left abdomen, it could be related to the stomach, as gastritis or gastric ulcers can cause postprandial discomfort.
Additionally, eating too quickly, overeating, or gulping down food can also lead to post-meal discomfort.
Regarding the issue of accompanying diarrhea, it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist to determine if further examination is necessary.

More Info
Sudden severe abdominal pain, especially when it occurs in waves, can be alarming and may indicate a variety of underlying conditions. Given your description of the pain being localized to the left side of your abdomen and occurring in waves, there are several potential causes to consider.
1. Gastrointestinal Issues: The left side of the abdomen houses several important organs, including parts of the colon and the left kidney. Conditions such as diverticulitis (inflammation of small pouches that can form in the colon), colitis (inflammation of the colon), or even constipation can cause severe pain. If you have been experiencing frequent diarrhea, it could also lead to irritation of the intestinal lining, resulting in pain.
2. Kidney Problems: The left kidney is located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. Conditions such as kidney stones or infections can cause severe pain that may radiate to the lower abdomen or back. The pain from kidney stones is often described as sharp and can come in waves, similar to what you are experiencing.
3. Musculoskeletal Pain: Sometimes, pain in the abdomen can be related to muscle strain or injury, especially if you have been physically active or lifting heavy objects. This type of pain may also present in waves, particularly with movement.
4. Pancreatitis: Although less common, inflammation of the pancreas can cause severe abdominal pain, typically in the upper abdomen that may radiate to the back. This is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
5. Gynecological Issues: If you are female, conditions such as ovarian cysts or ectopic pregnancy can also present with severe abdominal pain, particularly on one side.
Given that you have also mentioned experiencing frequent diarrhea, it is crucial to consider whether there is an underlying infection or inflammatory condition affecting your gastrointestinal tract.
When to Seek Help
You should seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Severe Pain: If the pain is unbearable or worsening.
- Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience fever, vomiting, or blood in your stool.
- Duration: If the pain persists for more than a few hours without improvement.
- Changes in Bowel Habits: If you notice significant changes in your bowel habits, such as persistent diarrhea or constipation.
Conclusion
While it is understandable that your father may want to observe the situation, the nature of your symptoms warrants a thorough evaluation. It is essential to rule out serious conditions that could require prompt treatment. You may want to discuss with him the importance of seeking medical advice, especially considering the severity and nature of your pain. A healthcare professional can perform the necessary examinations, such as blood tests, imaging studies, or endoscopies, to determine the cause of your symptoms and provide appropriate treatment.
In summary, while some causes of left abdominal pain may be benign, the sudden onset of severe pain, especially in conjunction with other gastrointestinal symptoms, should not be ignored. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to abdominal pain.
