Medication consultation and medication-related issues?
I have been taking Lepax 10mg and Sulmaty 50mg continuously for almost a month, and I noticed nipple discharge in the past couple of days.
Could this be related to the medication?

Hello: A small number of individuals taking certain psychiatric medications may experience an increase in prolactin levels, leading to milk secretion.
It is recommended to first undergo a blood test at the hospital to check for elevated prolactin levels, and then discuss with your prescribing physician whether a medication adjustment is necessary.
I hope this answers your question :)

Breast discharge, particularly when it occurs in individuals who are taking psychiatric medications, can indeed be a concerning side effect. In your case, you mentioned taking Lepax (which contains the active ingredient Olanzapine) and Sulmaty (which contains the active ingredient Sulpride). Both of these medications belong to a class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics and can influence hormonal levels in the body, particularly prolactin.
Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that plays a crucial role in lactation and breast development. Certain psychiatric medications, especially antipsychotics, can increase prolactin levels, leading to a condition known as hyperprolactinemia. This condition can result in various symptoms, including breast discharge, galactorrhea (the production of breast milk in individuals who are not breastfeeding), menstrual irregularities, and even gynecomastia (breast tissue enlargement in males).
Lepax (Olanzapine) is known to have a relatively lower risk of causing elevated prolactin levels compared to some other antipsychotics, but it can still occur. Sulmaty (Sulpiride), on the other hand, is more commonly associated with increased prolactin levels and can lead to breast discharge as a side effect. The risk of experiencing these side effects can vary based on individual factors, including dosage, duration of treatment, and individual sensitivity to the medication.
If you are experiencing breast discharge after starting these medications, it is essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They may want to evaluate your symptoms further, possibly including blood tests to check your prolactin levels. Depending on the results, your doctor may consider adjusting your medication regimen or switching to an alternative treatment that has a lower risk of causing hyperprolactinemia.
In addition to the hormonal effects, it is also important to consider other potential causes of breast discharge, such as hormonal imbalances unrelated to medication, benign breast conditions, or even more serious conditions. Therefore, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is crucial to determine the underlying cause and appropriate management.
In summary, breast discharge can be related to the medications you are taking, particularly due to their effects on prolactin levels. It is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider to assess your situation and determine the best course of action. Do not stop or adjust your medication without professional guidance, as this could lead to withdrawal symptoms or a worsening of your underlying condition.
