Bowel issues
Recently, after having a bowel movement, I sometimes forget to flush the toilet.
When I go back to flush, I often notice light red water around the stool.
I'm not sure if it's blood, but when I wipe, I don't see any traces of blood.

Dr. Li Qinglong reply Surgery
Ms.
Yun: Hello, it could possibly be caused by internal hemorrhoids or an anal fissure, but a clinical examination at the outpatient department is necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

When you notice red water around your stool after a bowel movement, it can understandably cause concern about the possibility of blood. The appearance of red in the toilet can be alarming, but it's important to consider several factors before jumping to conclusions.
First, the color of the water can be influenced by various factors, including the type of toilet and the lighting in the bathroom. If your toilet bowl is red or has a reddish tint, it may be difficult to accurately assess the color of the water. Therefore, it might be helpful to observe your stool and any accompanying water in a different setting, such as a white toilet, to get a clearer view.
The presence of red water could potentially indicate blood, but it is not the only explanation. In some cases, the red color might be due to food or drink consumed prior to the bowel movement. For instance, beets, certain berries, or foods with artificial coloring can sometimes lead to red discoloration in the stool or surrounding water. Additionally, if you have recently consumed any medications or supplements that could affect stool color, this could also be a factor.
Another possibility is that the red water is due to a condition affecting the rectum or anus, such as hemorrhoids (internal or external), anal fissures, or other forms of rectal bleeding. Hemorrhoids, which are swollen blood vessels in the rectal area, can cause bright red blood to appear on the toilet paper or in the water. Anal fissures, which are small tears in the lining of the anus, can also lead to bleeding during bowel movements.
If you are not seeing any blood on the toilet paper when wiping, it may suggest that the bleeding is not coming from the rectal area but rather from higher up in the gastrointestinal tract, which could be a more serious concern. Conditions such as diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or even colorectal cancer can cause bleeding that may not be immediately visible in the stool but can affect the water in the toilet.
To determine the cause of the red water, it is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience additional symptoms such as abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, weight loss, or persistent bleeding, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, stool tests, or imaging studies, to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In summary, while the presence of red water around your stool can be concerning, it is essential to consider various factors that could contribute to this observation. If you are unsure or if symptoms persist, consulting a healthcare professional is the best course of action to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Remember, early intervention can be key in addressing any potential health issues effectively.
