11 Days Post-Rhinoplasty: Concerns About Persistent Redness and Recovery - Plastic Surgery

11 days post-rhinoplasty?

Hello Doctor: It has been 11 days post-surgery, and there is a deep red area at the bridge of my nose where it connects to the root, which does not fade.
When I gently press it with my finger, it returns to its original skin color, but once I release it, it quickly becomes congested again.
The bruising around my eyes has already dissipated.
I sent a photo to my surgeon, who only mentioned that it is due to vascular dilation and advised me to wait a bit longer.
I would like to ask more questions: Is waiting really effective in this situation? If not, what other proactive solutions are available? I am feeling anxious to the point of losing sleep.
Thank you.

Rhinoplasty places stress on the original tissues (stretching them tighter), and 11 days post-surgery should be a period of observation, as there are no more proactive measures to take.

More Info

After rhinoplasty, it is not uncommon for patients to experience various degrees of swelling, bruising, and discoloration around the nasal area. In your case, the persistent deep redness on the bridge of your nose, which temporarily fades when pressed, suggests that there may be localized vascular changes, such as vasodilation or increased blood flow to the area. This can occur as part of the healing process, especially after a surgical procedure that manipulates the delicate tissues of the nose.

At 11 days post-surgery, it is generally expected that most of the swelling and bruising should be resolving. However, individual healing times can vary significantly based on factors such as skin type, the extent of the surgery, and individual healing responses. The fact that your bruising around the eyes has dissipated is a positive sign, indicating that your body is healing, but the persistent redness on the nose may require further observation.

Your surgeon's assessment that this is due to blood vessel dilation is plausible. In many cases, this condition can resolve on its own as the tissues continue to heal. However, if the redness persists beyond a few weeks or worsens, it would be advisable to follow up with your surgeon for a more thorough evaluation. They may consider additional treatments, such as topical medications or laser therapy, if necessary.

While waiting for the redness to subside is often the recommended course of action, there are some supportive measures you can take to promote healing and potentially reduce discomfort:
1. Cold Compresses: Applying a cold compress to the area can help reduce swelling and may alleviate some of the redness. Just be sure to avoid direct contact with the skin to prevent frostbite.

2. Avoiding Irritants: Stay away from harsh skincare products or makeup that could irritate the healing skin. Gentle cleansing and moisturizing can help maintain skin health.

3. Sun Protection: Protect your nose from sun exposure, as UV rays can exacerbate redness and lead to pigmentation changes. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and wear a hat when outdoors.

4. Hydration and Nutrition: Staying well-hydrated and consuming a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support your body's healing processes. Foods high in vitamin C, zinc, and antioxidants can be particularly beneficial.

5. Stress Management: Anxiety can impede healing, so consider relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle yoga to help manage stress levels.

If you find that the redness does not improve or if you experience any new symptoms, such as increased pain, discharge, or fever, it is crucial to seek medical advice promptly. Your surgeon may want to rule out any complications, such as infection or improper healing.

In summary, while it is understandable to feel anxious about the persistent redness following your rhinoplasty, it is often a normal part of the healing process. Continue to monitor the area, follow your surgeon's advice, and take supportive measures to promote healing. If concerns persist, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance.
