Ear problems
Today, I accidentally used headphones that had small insects in them (both ears).
As a precaution, I poured salad oil into my ears (after pouring, I realized it was expired, and I'm not sure if that will have any effect).
Since I didn't have a dropper, I used a straw, but it was hard to control, so I poured in a significant amount.
1) After pouring the oil, do I need to do anything special to clean my ears (since they still feel oily, even after showering)? 2) In this situation, do I need to see an ENT specialist (I currently only have mild intermittent pain in my ears)? Thank you!

Hello, if there are no obvious discomfort in the ears or hearing loss, you may observe your condition for now.
However, if the pain persists, it is advisable to visit an otolaryngologist for an examination.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
When dealing with ear issues, particularly after introducing substances like salad oil into the ear canal, it’s important to approach the situation with caution. Here’s a comprehensive response to your concerns regarding the use of expired salad oil in your ears and the subsequent steps you should consider.
1. Cleaning the Ears After Oil Application
After applying salad oil in your ears, it’s understandable to feel concerned about the residual oil. The ear canal is a delicate area, and introducing any foreign substance can lead to irritation or complications. Here are some steps to consider:
- Avoid Further Insertion: Do not attempt to use cotton swabs or other objects to clean the oil out, as this can push the oil deeper into the ear canal or cause injury to the ear drum.
- Natural Drainage: The ear is designed to self-clean. If you have applied oil, it may help to tilt your head to the side to allow gravity to assist in draining the oil out. You can also gently pull on your earlobe to help facilitate drainage.
- Warm Water Rinse: After a day or so, if the oil persists, you might consider using warm water to rinse your ear. You can do this in the shower, allowing the water to flow into your ear while tilting your head. However, ensure that you do not force water into your ear canal.
- Drying: After rinsing, gently dry your outer ear with a soft towel. Avoid inserting anything into the ear canal.
2. When to See a Doctor
Given that you are experiencing mild pain and have used expired oil, it is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely. Here are some indicators that you should seek medical attention:
- Persistent Pain: If the mild pain escalates or persists beyond a couple of days, it’s essential to consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. Pain can indicate irritation, infection, or other complications.
- Hearing Changes: If you notice any changes in your hearing, such as muffled sounds or a feeling of fullness in the ear, this could signify a blockage or other issues that require medical evaluation.
- Signs of Infection: Watch for symptoms such as redness, swelling, discharge, or fever, which could indicate an infection that needs treatment.
- Unusual Symptoms: If you experience dizziness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or any other unusual symptoms, it’s best to seek medical advice.
Additional Considerations
Using expired salad oil can pose risks, as the oil may have degraded and could potentially harbor bacteria or other pathogens. While the risk of serious complications from a one-time exposure is generally low, it’s crucial to be vigilant about any changes in your ear health.
In summary, while you may not need immediate medical attention if your symptoms are mild and manageable, it is wise to keep an eye on your condition. If symptoms worsen or do not improve, visiting an ENT specialist is the best course of action. They can provide a thorough examination and appropriate treatment if necessary. Always prioritize ear health and avoid introducing foreign substances into the ear canal without professional guidance.
