Double Vision When Watching TV: Eye Care Insights - Ophthalmology

There is double vision when reading text on the television while wearing glasses?

Hello, Doctor: I recently replaced my third pair of glasses due to a broken frame (about a month ago).
My second pair of glasses worked fine, except for one issue: when watching TV, the text appeared doubled (the letters looked independent to each eye, making it difficult to focus and integrate), which was uncomfortable.
Since I rarely watch TV and had no issues using the computer or playing sports, I passively wore the second pair for two years.
However, after getting the new glasses, I found that the text on the TV screen appeared normal, and when I used the first pair of glasses, the text also looked normal.
I have some astigmatism, and I would like to ask you: 1.
Is there a possibility that the optical shop where I got my second pair of glasses made a mistake? Can the eye's focus change so easily? 2.
I feel that my eyes are normal; is there a need for further examination? 3.
Can I continue to use the second pair of glasses while playing sports? Will this harm my eyes? Thank you for your response.
🙏

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello Stancy: 1.
It is possible that there is an issue with a certain part of your glasses.
2.
You can also check and bring your glasses along to see if the problem lies with them.
3.
If you are experiencing the symptoms you described, it would be better not to wear them; even if they don't harm your eyes, they can still cause discomfort.

When it comes to double vision, particularly in the context of watching TV, there are several factors that could contribute to the experience you described. Your situation raises important questions about the quality of your eyeglasses, the health of your eyes, and whether or not you should continue using your second pair of glasses for activities like playing sports.

1. Quality of Eyeglasses: It is possible that the second pair of glasses you had was not properly calibrated for your vision needs. Eyeglasses require precise measurements to ensure that the lenses align correctly with your eyes. If the prescription was incorrect or if the lenses were not manufactured accurately, it could lead to issues like double vision or difficulty focusing. The fact that your vision improved with the new pair of glasses suggests that the second pair may not have been suitable for your eyes. It’s also worth noting that even minor changes in the prescription or alignment can significantly affect visual clarity, especially when watching something at a distance, such as a TV screen.

2. Eye Health and Further Examination: Given that you have experienced double vision with one pair of glasses but not with others, it may be prudent to have a comprehensive eye examination. While you feel your eyes are generally normal, changes in vision can sometimes indicate underlying issues that may not be immediately apparent. An eye care professional can assess your eye health, check for any potential conditions that could be contributing to your symptoms, and ensure that your current prescriptions are appropriate for your needs.

3. Using Glasses for Sports: If you feel comfortable wearing your second pair of glasses while playing sports, it is generally acceptable as long as they provide you with adequate vision and do not cause discomfort. However, if you experience any visual disturbances, such as double vision or blurriness, while wearing them during physical activities, it would be wise to reconsider their use. Sports often require quick reflexes and clear vision, so using glasses that do not provide optimal clarity could potentially affect your performance and safety.

In summary, the experience of double vision when watching TV could be attributed to the quality of your second pair of glasses. It is essential to ensure that your eyeglasses are correctly prescribed and fitted. If you have any concerns about your vision or eye health, a visit to an eye care professional is recommended for a thorough examination. They can provide you with tailored advice and ensure that your vision remains sharp for all activities, including sports and leisure. Remember, maintaining good eye health is crucial, and addressing any visual issues promptly can help prevent further complications.
