Is it normal to experience soreness after acupuncture?

Hello, I have been experiencing tinnitus and sleep disturbances in my right ear.
This past Monday (June 6), I visited Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei for acupuncture treatment.
The doctor performed acupuncture on my neck, but afterward, I felt soreness and weakness in my right arm while driving home.
Once I got home, the soreness intensified, and my neck also became very painful, which led to a sleepless night.
The next morning, I woke up with stiffness in my upper body, and I experienced pain in my right shoulder when coughing.
It has been over two days now (June 8), and the symptoms are still the same.
Is this considered normal, or should I return for a follow-up consultation? Thank you.

Dr. Lai Huilian reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hello, A-Liang: Post-acupuncture soreness may be a residual sensation from the needles.
You can discuss this with your acupuncturist to help alleviate the lingering effects.
Generally, resting will gradually relieve the discomfort.
If you continue to feel unwell, you may want to return for a follow-up appointment.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info

Post-acupuncture soreness can be a common experience for some individuals, particularly if the treatment involved deep needling or if the patient has underlying muscle tension or discomfort in the treated areas. Acupuncture is known to stimulate blood flow and promote healing, but it can also lead to temporary soreness or discomfort, especially in areas where needles were inserted.

In your case, the soreness and discomfort in your right arm and neck following acupuncture treatment could be attributed to several factors. First, the acupuncture needles may have stimulated muscle fibers or nerves in the area, leading to a temporary inflammatory response. This can manifest as soreness, stiffness, or even a feeling of weakness in the affected muscles. Additionally, if the acupuncture was performed on tense or tight muscles, it may have exacerbated existing discomfort, leading to post-treatment soreness.

It's also important to consider the positioning during the acupuncture session. If you were in an awkward position for an extended period, it could contribute to muscle strain or discomfort afterward. Furthermore, if you have a history of neck or shoulder issues, the acupuncture treatment may have temporarily aggravated these conditions.

While some soreness is normal, especially if it is mild and subsides within a few days, persistent or worsening pain should not be ignored. Given that you are experiencing significant discomfort, stiffness, and difficulty sleeping, it would be advisable to follow up with your acupuncturist or healthcare provider. They can assess your symptoms more thoroughly and determine if any adjustments to your treatment plan are necessary.
In some cases, the soreness may indicate that the acupuncture treatment was effective in releasing tension, but if the pain is severe or accompanied by other symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or weakness, it may warrant further investigation. This could include imaging studies or a referral to a physical therapist or other specialists who can provide additional support and treatment options.

In summary, while post-acupuncture soreness can be normal, your symptoms seem to be more pronounced and persistent than what is typically expected. It is essential to communicate these concerns with your healthcare provider to ensure that you receive appropriate care and to rule out any underlying issues that may require attention.
