Pneumonia issues

I would like to ask about whether COVID-19 can cause marks on the chest that resemble those from gua sha.
My boyfriend was diagnosed on Monday, and yesterday he noticed light marks on his chest that look similar to gua sha marks.
They are not very prominent, but he is concerned.

Dr. Lin Zhebin reply Family Medicine

Hello: Skin manifestations are rare in COVID-19 infections; when they do occur, the most common presentations are rashes or erythema.
Of course, the marks on your boyfriend's chest that resemble abrasions are also a possibility.
It is advisable to monitor your boyfriend's skin condition.
If the lesions do not continue to expand or appear in multiple locations, and there are no accompanying severe symptoms (such as chest pain or shortness of breath), there is no need to rush to seek medical attention.
You can consider seeking medical care after recovery and the end of isolation.

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has a wide range of symptoms and effects on the body, some of which are still being studied. One of the less common manifestations that has been reported includes skin changes, which can sometimes appear as bruise-like marks or rashes.
The appearance of bruise-like marks on the chest, especially after a recent COVID-19 diagnosis, can be concerning. While it is not a classic symptom of COVID-19, there are a few potential explanations for this phenomenon:
1. Vascular Effects: COVID-19 has been associated with various vascular complications, including blood clotting issues. The virus can cause inflammation in blood vessels, which may lead to changes in blood flow or even small clots. This can result in areas of the skin appearing bruised or discolored.

2. Immune Response: The body’s immune response to the virus can also lead to skin manifestations. Some patients have reported rashes or other skin changes during or after their infection. These can sometimes resemble bruises, especially if there is localized inflammation.

3. Physical Strain or Trauma: If your boyfriend has been coughing frequently or has experienced significant physical strain due to illness, this could lead to minor trauma to the skin or underlying tissues, resulting in bruising.

4. Other Conditions: It’s also important to consider that the appearance of bruise-like marks could be unrelated to COVID-19. Conditions such as thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), which can occur due to various reasons including viral infections, can lead to easy bruising.
Given that your boyfriend has recently been diagnosed with COVID-19 and is experiencing these symptoms, it is advisable for him to consult a healthcare professional. A doctor can perform a thorough examination and may recommend blood tests to check for any underlying issues, such as platelet counts or signs of clotting disorders.
In the meantime, it is important for him to monitor his symptoms closely. If he experiences any worsening symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, difficulty breathing, or any neurological symptoms (like confusion or severe headache), he should seek medical attention immediately.

In summary, while COVID-19 can potentially cause skin changes that may resemble bruises, it is essential to evaluate these symptoms in the context of his overall health and any other symptoms he may be experiencing. Consulting with a healthcare provider will provide clarity and ensure that any necessary interventions are made.
