Bleeding persists three weeks after medical abortion?
Hello, doctor.
I took RU486 at the clinic on May 29 and took the second dose on May 31.
During my follow-up appointment on June 5, the ultrasound indicated that everything was cleared out, and the internal examination confirmed that some residual tissue was removed.
I returned for another follow-up on June 9, and the doctor said it was all clean.
However, on June 21, I noticed some blood when wiping after using the restroom.
The amount is much less than my usual menstrual flow, just some blood mixed in with the discharge.
I am currently using panty liners to manage it.
I would like to ask if this means I haven't fully cleared everything out? Is this light bleeding normal? How long is it likely to last? Thank you.
CC, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/06/21

Hello, if there is persistent bleeding, the patient must return for clinical examination, β-HCG measurement, and ultrasound scanning to determine whether the embryo has been completely expelled.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

After a medical abortion, it is not uncommon to experience some light bleeding or spotting for a few weeks. In your case, it seems that you have undergone a medical abortion using RU486, and despite follow-up appointments indicating that your uterus is clear of any remaining tissue, you are still experiencing light bleeding three weeks post-procedure.
Generally, after a medical abortion, women may experience bleeding that can last from a few days to several weeks. The bleeding can vary in color and consistency, often starting as bright red and then transitioning to a lighter color, such as brown or pink, as the body expels the remaining tissue and the uterus heals. The amount of bleeding can also vary significantly from person to person. Some women may have heavier bleeding initially, while others may only experience light spotting.
In your situation, the fact that you are experiencing light bleeding that is significantly less than a typical menstrual period is not unusual. It is possible that this bleeding is simply part of the normal healing process. However, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If the bleeding becomes heavier, or if you experience severe pain, fever, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
The medical advice you received from your healthcare provider, indicating that the bleeding should resolve within a few weeks and that follow-up ultrasound is not necessary unless there are complications, aligns with standard practice. However, every individual’s body responds differently, and some may take longer to fully recover.
If the light bleeding persists beyond a few weeks or if you have any concerns about the possibility of retained products of conception, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional monitoring or an ultrasound to ensure that everything is indeed clear.
In summary, while persistent light bleeding after a medical abortion can be normal, it is essential to stay vigilant and communicate with your healthcare provider about any changes in your symptoms. If you feel uncertain or anxious about your situation, do not hesitate to reach out for further evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and your healthcare provider is there to support you through this process.
