Borborygmi (stomach rumbling)

Hello Doctor, I apologize for continuously asking, but I have been hearing gurgling sounds in my abdomen when I lie down, sit up, or take deep breaths.
Others can hear it too, and it feels like there is water inside.
Besides drinking water, are there other possible causes? Recently, I have also been experiencing symptoms of nausea, loss of appetite, and bloating.
Thank you, Doctor.

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

It is just normal gastrointestinal fluid/air vibrations.
If there are other symptoms, seek medical attention.

More Info

Gurgling sounds in the abdomen, often referred to as "borborygmi," are typically associated with the movement of gas and fluids through the intestines. These sounds can be quite normal, especially after eating or drinking, as they indicate that the digestive system is functioning. However, when accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite, and bloating, it may indicate an underlying issue that requires further investigation.

Several factors can contribute to the gurgling sounds you are experiencing:
1. Normal Digestive Processes: The intestines are constantly moving to mix and propel food and gas. This movement can create gurgling sounds, especially when the stomach is empty or after consuming liquids.

2. Gastrointestinal Disturbances: Conditions such as gastritis, gastroenteritis, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can lead to increased bowel sounds. These conditions may also cause symptoms like nausea, bloating, and changes in appetite.

3. Food Intolerances or Allergies: If your body has difficulty digesting certain foods, it can lead to excessive gas production and gurgling sounds. Common culprits include lactose (found in dairy products) and gluten (found in wheat products).

4. Infections: Gastrointestinal infections, whether viral or bacterial, can cause increased bowel activity and gurgling sounds, along with symptoms like nausea and loss of appetite.

5. Obstruction: In rare cases, a blockage in the intestines can lead to abnormal bowel sounds. This is usually accompanied by severe pain, vomiting, and inability to pass gas or stool.

6. Hydration Levels: As you mentioned, drinking water can also contribute to gurgling sounds. If you are well-hydrated, the movement of fluids through your intestines can create audible sounds.

Given your symptoms of nausea, loss of appetite, and bloating, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend diagnostic tests such as blood tests, imaging studies (like an ultrasound or CT scan), or endoscopy to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, consider keeping a food diary to track what you eat and any associated symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in identifying potential food intolerances or allergies. Additionally, try to maintain a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and avoid foods that you suspect may trigger your symptoms.

In summary, while gurgling sounds in the abdomen can be a normal part of digestion, the presence of additional symptoms like nausea and loss of appetite warrants further evaluation. It is essential to address these concerns with a healthcare provider to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
