The glans is too sensitive, and it feels painful when touched?

Hello Doctor, I would like to explain my situation.
I have a condition known as phimosis, which is not painful but simply involves an excessive length of foreskin that prevents the glans from being exposed even when erect.
Since I have never engaged in sexual intercourse, I haven't paid much attention to it until recently.
I've noticed that my glans has become quite sensitive; although I can expose it regardless of whether I am erect, any touch results in a slight stinging sensation.
This concerns me as I wonder if it might cause issues during future sexual activity.

I have seen others on this website with similar issues, but most of them have taken some measures to address it.
For me, just touching it causes discomfort, and I worry that prolonged contact with the fabric of my underwear might be uncomfortable.
Is there any way to improve my condition? Currently, I only occasionally expose it while showering and touch it with my hand or rinse it with water, and I rarely come into contact with other objects.
However, since touching it is quite uncomfortable, I would like to know if simply allowing it to come into contact with air might have a beneficial effect.

Hello: It is common to experience irritation when exposed after being protected by the foreskin for a long time.
It is recommended to gradually increase the time of exposure (but if the foreskin has been retracted for a long time and there is swelling, it should be avoided).
If there is no improvement after 1-2 months, it is advisable to seek an evaluation at a clinic.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Managing sensitivity of the glans can be a concern for many individuals, especially those with conditions like phimosis, where the foreskin is too tight to be easily retracted. In your case, it sounds like you are experiencing heightened sensitivity in the glans, which can lead to discomfort during contact, even with clothing or light touch. Here are some tips and considerations to help manage your sensitivity and improve your comfort:

1. Understanding Sensitivity
The glans (the head of the penis) is naturally sensitive due to a high concentration of nerve endings. In individuals with phimosis, the glans may not be exposed to air and friction as much as in those without the condition, leading to increased sensitivity when it is finally exposed. This heightened sensitivity can sometimes cause discomfort or a tingling sensation when touched.

2. Gradual Exposure
To help desensitize the glans, consider gradually increasing its exposure to air and light touch. You mentioned that you occasionally expose it during showers; this is a good start. You can try to gently touch the area with clean hands or a soft cloth during bathing to help your body acclimate to the sensation. Over time, this may help reduce sensitivity.

3. Hygiene Practices
Maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water during showers. Avoid harsh soaps or products that may irritate the sensitive skin. After washing, ensure the area is thoroughly dried to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to irritation.

4. Clothing Choices
Wearing loose-fitting underwear and pants can help minimize friction and irritation. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton, which can reduce discomfort from contact with the skin. Avoid tight-fitting clothing that may rub against the glans and exacerbate sensitivity.

5. Moisturizing
If you experience dryness or irritation, consider using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer on the area. This can help soothe the skin and reduce discomfort from friction. However, avoid applying any products that contain fragrances or irritants, as these can worsen sensitivity.

6. Consulting a Healthcare Provider
Since you have a history of phimosis and are experiencing discomfort, it may be beneficial to consult a urologist or healthcare provider. They can assess your condition and discuss potential treatment options, including whether circumcision or other procedures might be appropriate for you. In some cases, topical treatments or steroid creams can help with sensitivity and inflammation.

7. Preparing for Future Sexual Activity
If you plan to engage in sexual activity in the future, it’s important to address your sensitivity beforehand. Discussing your concerns with a partner can also help alleviate anxiety. Using plenty of lubrication during sexual activity can reduce friction and discomfort. Additionally, taking things slowly and communicating with your partner about what feels comfortable can help ease any potential discomfort.

8. Psychological Factors
Sometimes, anxiety about sensitivity can exacerbate the perception of discomfort. Practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or mindfulness, may help reduce anxiety and improve your overall comfort level.

Conclusion
Managing sensitivity of the glans involves a combination of gradual exposure, proper hygiene, clothing choices, and possibly medical consultation. While sensitivity can be concerning, many individuals find that with time and appropriate care, they can improve their comfort levels. If your symptoms persist or worsen, seeking professional medical advice is essential to ensure there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed.
