The glans is too sensitive, and it feels painful when touched?
Hello Doctor: I am 20 years old, and this year I finally see my entire glans.
In the past, due to phimosis, I couldn't retract it even when not erect.
I have been using topical steroids and gradually rinsing with water while showering to help with retraction.
Now, I can retract it smoothly even when not erect, and it works when erect too (though it feels a bit tight, I still apply medication and frequently retract it).
Currently, my glans is very sensitive, especially the tip.
I thought about leaving it exposed while sleeping to reduce sensitivity by allowing it to come into contact with my underwear, but that sensation is really unbearable.
I'm wondering if there are any methods to alleviate the sensitivity or if there are better alternatives.
Should I wear tight boxer briefs or briefs to keep it secure? Otherwise, wearing loose boxers causes it to move around too much when I walk, which is uncomfortable.
I prefer not to undergo surgery to expose the glans.
I hope you can provide me with some advice or methods.
Thank you very much!

Wayne: Hello, sensitivity of the glans can indeed be quite bothersome.
Currently, there isn't much that can be done to improve it; the best approach is to regularly clean the glans and expose it.
With prolonged stimulation, you may gradually become accustomed to it, which can reduce sensitivity.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

Managing sensitivity of the glans can be a common concern, especially after experiencing changes such as the release from phimosis. It's great to hear that you've made progress with your condition, but I understand that increased sensitivity can be uncomfortable. Here are some tips and methods that may help alleviate discomfort and manage sensitivity effectively.
1. Gradual Exposure:
Since your glans is now exposed, it may take some time for your body to adjust to the new sensitivity. Gradual exposure to different fabrics and sensations can help desensitize the area over time. Start by wearing soft, breathable fabrics like cotton, and gradually introduce different textures. This can help your glans become accustomed to contact without overwhelming sensitivity.
2. Moisturizing Creams:
Using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can help soothe the skin of the glans. Look for products specifically designed for sensitive skin. Avoid any harsh chemicals or fragrances that could irritate the area. Applying a thin layer of moisturizer can create a protective barrier and reduce sensitivity.
3. Adjusting Underwear Choices:
As you mentioned, wearing tight-fitting underwear can help keep everything in place and reduce excessive movement, which can lead to irritation. Opt for snug-fitting cotton briefs or boxer briefs that provide support without being too constrictive. This can help minimize friction and discomfort during daily activities.
4. Temperature Regulation:
Sometimes, temperature can affect sensitivity. If you find that warmth increases sensitivity, consider wearing cooler fabrics or adjusting your environment. Conversely, if cold temperatures are uncomfortable, ensure you are adequately warmed.
5. Desensitizing Products:
There are over-the-counter desensitizing creams or sprays available that contain lidocaine or benzocaine. These products can temporarily numb the area and reduce sensitivity. However, it’s essential to use these products as directed and consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new treatment.
6. Pelvic Floor Exercises:
Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles can help improve control and sensitivity. Kegel exercises, which involve contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles, can enhance blood flow and potentially reduce sensitivity over time.
7. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques:
Sometimes, anxiety about sensitivity can exacerbate the feeling. Practicing mindfulness, deep breathing, or relaxation techniques can help you manage your thoughts and feelings about sensitivity. This can help you feel more comfortable in your body and reduce the perception of sensitivity.
8. Consulting a Specialist:
If sensitivity continues to be a significant issue, consider consulting a urologist or dermatologist who specializes in male genital health. They can provide tailored advice and may suggest other treatment options based on your specific situation.
9. Avoiding Irritants:
Be mindful of soaps, lotions, or other products that may irritate the sensitive skin of the glans. Opt for gentle, hypoallergenic products and avoid anything that causes discomfort.
Conclusion:
It's important to remember that sensitivity can vary from person to person, and what works for one individual may not work for another. Patience is key as your body adjusts to the changes. If you find that these methods do not provide relief, or if you experience any pain, redness, or other concerning symptoms, it’s crucial to seek medical advice. Your comfort and health are paramount, and a healthcare professional can help guide you through this process effectively.
