Does Fexofenadine and pseudoephedrine affect the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives?
I recently experienced severe allergies, so I visited an ENT specialist and was prescribed Fexofenadine and Pseudoephedrine.
However, I forgot to inform the doctor that I am taking the birth control pill, Diane 21.
I would like to know if these two medications will affect the contraceptive effectiveness of the birth control pill.
Thank you.

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology
Hello Ms.
Ching: Fexofenadine and pseudoephedrine do not affect the efficacy of birth control.
However, pseudoephedrine combined with orange juice may cause headaches, so please be cautious.
Additionally, taking pseudoephedrine may cause drowsiness, so please be careful if you are driving or riding a bike.
Wishing you safety and happiness.

More Info
Fexofenadine and pseudoephedrine are commonly used medications for the treatment of allergies and nasal congestion, respectively. Fexofenadine is an antihistamine that helps alleviate allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes, while pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that relieves nasal congestion by shrinking the blood vessels in the nasal passages.
When it comes to their interaction with hormonal contraceptives, such as the birth control pill you mentioned (Diane 21), research indicates that neither fexofenadine nor pseudoephedrine has a significant impact on the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. The primary concern with many medications and birth control pills is whether they induce liver enzymes that metabolize the hormones in the contraceptive, potentially reducing their effectiveness. However, fexofenadine and pseudoephedrine do not have this effect.
In fact, studies have shown that fexofenadine does not affect the pharmacokinetics of contraceptive hormones, meaning it does not alter how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, or excretes these hormones. Similarly, pseudoephedrine has not been shown to interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. Therefore, you can be reassured that taking these medications while on Diane 21 should not compromise your contraceptive protection.
It is important to note that while these medications do not affect birth control effectiveness, they can have side effects. Pseudoephedrine, for example, can cause drowsiness in some individuals, so caution is advised if you are driving or operating machinery. Additionally, pseudoephedrine may interact with certain foods, such as citrus fruits, which can lead to headaches in some people.
If you have any concerns about your medications or their interactions, it is always best to discuss them with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current medications.
In summary, you can continue taking fexofenadine and pseudoephedrine without worrying about their impact on the effectiveness of your birth control pill, Diane 21. Always keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider regarding any new medications or changes in your health status, especially when it comes to managing allergies or other conditions while on hormonal contraceptives.
