Fexofenadine, pseudoephedrine, Nasonex nasal spray, and the effectiveness of oral contraceptives?

I received medication from an otolaryngologist for my rhinitis, but I forgot to inform the doctor that I am taking oral contraceptives.
I would like to know if the three medications mentioned in the subject will affect the contraceptive effectiveness of the oral contraceptives.
Thank you, doctor.

Ching, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/07/12

Fexofenadine, pseudoephedrine, and Nasonex are commonly prescribed medications for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and other nasal conditions. When it comes to their interaction with hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, it is important to understand how these medications work and their potential effects on contraceptive efficacy.

Fexofenadine is an antihistamine that is primarily used to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. Importantly, fexofenadine does not have any known interactions with hormonal contraceptives, meaning it does not affect the effectiveness of birth control pills.

Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that relieves nasal congestion by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages. Similar to fexofenadine, pseudoephedrine does not interfere with the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives. However, it is worth noting that pseudoephedrine can cause side effects such as increased heart rate, insomnia, and nervousness, which might indirectly affect a person's overall well-being and adherence to their medication regimen.

Nasonex (mometasone furoate) is a nasal corticosteroid used to treat nasal symptoms associated with allergies. Corticosteroids like Nasonex work by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages. There is no evidence to suggest that Nasonex affects the efficacy of birth control pills. In fact, corticosteroids are generally considered safe to use alongside hormonal contraceptives.

In summary, none of the medications you mentioned—fexofenadine, pseudoephedrine, or Nasonex—are known to impact the effectiveness of birth control pills like the one you are taking (Diane 35). Therefore, you can continue using your birth control as prescribed without concern for these medications affecting its efficacy.

It is always a good practice to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, to ensure safe and effective treatment. If you have any further concerns about your medications or their interactions, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider or a pharmacist for personalized advice.

In conclusion, while fexofenadine, pseudoephedrine, and Nasonex are effective treatments for allergy symptoms and do not interfere with birth control efficacy, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider is essential for optimal health management. If you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects while taking these medications, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.
