Acupuncture for Near Closure of Growth Plates
Hello, doctor.
I am 16 years old and my height is only 162 cm.
I will turn 17 in November.
A few days ago, I went to the hospital for a growth plate examination, and the doctor said that I am close to complete closure, with very little space between the bones.
I had Kawasaki disease when I was younger.
Did this condition affect my growth? Is it still beneficial for me to pursue acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine? I would like to reach a height of 165 cm.
Is there still a chance for me to grow taller?
A-Ming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/08/05
Dr. Zhang Weidong reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Hello, Amin.
Regarding the situation where the growth plates are nearly closed, I can only say there is a chance, but it is not very likely.
Please seek treatment as soon as possible to give it a try.
As for what you mentioned about Kawasaki disease, it is an acute condition that typically resolves within 1-2 weeks.
Unless it progresses to chronic heart-related issues, it should not affect your development.

At the age of 16, many individuals are still in the process of growing, but the potential for height increase largely depends on the status of the growth plates in the bones. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. Once these plates close, which typically occurs after puberty, further height increase is unlikely.
In your case, you mentioned that your growth plates are close to fully closed, which suggests that your growth potential is limited. While there may still be a small chance for some additional height, it is generally not significant. The closure of growth plates is a natural part of development and is influenced by various factors, including genetics, nutrition, and overall health.
Regarding your past medical history of Kawasaki disease, it is primarily an acute condition that affects the blood vessels and is not typically associated with long-term growth issues unless it leads to chronic complications, particularly involving the heart. If you have recovered without any lasting effects, it is unlikely that this condition is impacting your height.
As for acupuncture and herbal medicine, these practices are often sought for various health benefits, including potential effects on growth. However, the scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of acupuncture for height increase is limited, especially in individuals whose growth plates are nearing closure. While acupuncture may promote overall well-being and health, it is not a guaranteed method for increasing height, particularly at your age.
Herbal medicine may also be considered, but it is essential to approach this with caution. The efficacy and safety of herbal treatments can vary widely, and not all herbal remedies are suitable for everyone. Consulting with a qualified healthcare provider, particularly one knowledgeable in both Western and traditional Chinese medicine, is crucial before starting any new treatment.
In terms of lifestyle changes, maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, ensuring adequate sleep, and engaging in regular physical activity are vital for overall health and can support your growth potential while your growth plates are still open. However, since your growth plates are close to closure, these measures may not significantly impact your height.
In summary, while acupuncture and herbal medicine may provide some health benefits, they are unlikely to lead to a substantial increase in height at this stage of your development. It is essential to manage your expectations and focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you have concerns about your growth or health, consider discussing them with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
