SSRI Side Effects: Mood Changes and Sexual Dysfunction - Psychiatry

Drug side effects

Hello doctor, I recently took antidepressants (which I found online seem to be SSRIs) and I've been feeling irritable, as well as experiencing difficulties with ejaculation during masturbation.
I've decided to stop the medication for now and will discuss it with my doctor during my next appointment.
Will the aforementioned side effects recover? Additionally, prior to this, I was taking a medication called Brintellix (Vortioxetine) for a period of time, and I noticed that I had no pleasure during masturbation.
Could this be related to the medication?

Cang Zhilang, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/08/18

Dr. Wu Enliang reply Psychiatry

Hello, the side effects are reversible.
If they are due to medication, they will disappear after discontinuing the drug.
Sexual dysfunction caused by Clonazepam is not common and may not necessarily be related to the medication.

SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are a class of medications commonly prescribed for depression and anxiety disorders. While they can be effective in managing these conditions, they are also associated with a range of side effects, including mood changes and sexual dysfunction. Your concerns about irritability and difficulties with ejaculation are valid and warrant a deeper understanding.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that SSRIs work by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain, which can help improve mood and alleviate symptoms of depression. However, this alteration in serotonin levels can also lead to unintended side effects. Mood changes, such as increased irritability or emotional blunting, can occur in some individuals. This is not uncommon and can be attributed to the way SSRIs affect neurotransmitter systems in the brain. If you are experiencing heightened irritability, it may be beneficial to discuss this with your healthcare provider, as they may consider adjusting your dosage or switching to a different medication.

Regarding sexual dysfunction, SSRIs are well-known for causing issues such as decreased libido, difficulty achieving orgasm, and erectile dysfunction. The lack of pleasure during sexual activity, which you described as "DIY" (do-it-yourself), is a recognized side effect of these medications. This can be particularly distressing, as sexual health is an important aspect of overall well-being. The mechanism behind this side effect is thought to involve serotonin's role in sexual function; while increased serotonin can improve mood, it may simultaneously inhibit sexual arousal and response.

If you have recently stopped taking the medication, it is possible that your body will gradually return to its baseline state, and these side effects may diminish over time. However, the timeline for recovery can vary significantly from person to person. Some individuals may notice improvements within a few weeks, while others may take longer. It is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider during this period. They can help monitor your symptoms and provide guidance on managing any lingering side effects.

In addition to discussing your current medication, it may be helpful to explore other treatment options for your depression or anxiety. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other forms of psychotherapy can be effective alternatives or complementary treatments to medication. These therapies can provide you with coping strategies and tools to manage your mood and improve your overall mental health without the side effects associated with SSRIs.

Lastly, if you have been taking another medication, such as "腦樂靜" (which may refer to another type of antidepressant or anxiolytic), it is essential to consider potential interactions between the medications. Some drugs can exacerbate side effects when taken together, so discussing your complete medication history with your doctor is crucial.

In summary, while SSRIs can be effective in treating depression and anxiety, they can also lead to mood changes and sexual dysfunction. If you are experiencing these side effects, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and explore potential adjustments to your treatment plan. Recovery from side effects may take time, but with proper support and management, it is possible to find a balance that works for you.
