Should I See an Orthopedic Specialist for My Ankle Injury? - Orthopedics

I'm not sure if I should schedule another appointment with an orthopedic specialist?

Hello, Doctor: I fell and got injured on August 18.
I went to the emergency room for urgent treatment, but they only took X-rays of my hand and shoulder.
I returned to the orthopedic clinic on August 22 (the emergency registration desk helped me schedule the appointment).
However, since the day after the fall, my left foot has been swollen from the dorsum to the sole and ankle.
The area on the front of my calf (is it the tibia?) where I hit is also completely red, and the impact site is red, swollen, hot, painful, and itchy (but there is no open wound), which makes me very worried.
When I returned for my appointment yesterday, I kept asking the doctor about my foot, but he didn’t respond much; he just glanced at it and didn’t take any X-rays of my foot.
He prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and advised me to elevate the affected area.
I would like to know if I should continue taking the anti-inflammatory medication and observe the situation, or if I should go back to the hospital to see an orthopedic or rehabilitation specialist? I felt that the doctor during my follow-up was mainly focused on my hand, and I’m torn about whether to seek further evaluation for my foot, but I’m also worried that I might be overreacting.
I can still walk, but I have a slight limp.
If I do need to make another appointment, which department would be better? Thank you, Doctor, for taking the time to answer my questions.

If you have swelling in the dorsum and sole of your foot, along with pain in the ankle joint, it would be advisable to consult an orthopedic specialist for an examination to ensure peace of mind.

It sounds like you have experienced a significant ankle injury, and your concerns are completely valid. Given the symptoms you've described—swelling, redness, pain, and the inability to walk normally—it is advisable to seek further evaluation from an orthopedic specialist. Here are some reasons why seeing an orthopedic doctor is important in your case:
1. Injury Assessment: An orthopedic specialist can perform a thorough examination of your ankle and foot. They will assess not only the visible signs of injury but also the underlying structures, including bones, ligaments, and tendons. This is crucial because some injuries, such as fractures or ligament tears, may not be immediately apparent without proper imaging.

2. Imaging Studies: While you had X-rays taken of your hand and shoulder, it seems that your ankle did not receive the same attention. An orthopedic doctor can order specific imaging studies, such as X-rays or an MRI, to determine if there are any fractures, sprains, or other injuries that need to be addressed. Given the swelling and pain, it is possible that there could be a fracture or a significant soft tissue injury that requires treatment.

3. Treatment Options: Depending on the diagnosis, an orthopedic specialist can provide you with a tailored treatment plan. This may include rest, immobilization, physical therapy, or even surgical intervention if necessary. Early intervention can significantly affect the outcome of your recovery.

4. Pain Management: While you have been prescribed anti-inflammatory medication, an orthopedic specialist can help manage your pain more effectively and may suggest additional treatments, such as physical therapy or other modalities that can aid in your recovery.

5. Preventing Long-term Issues: If a significant injury is left untreated, it could lead to chronic pain, instability, or arthritis in the future. By getting a proper diagnosis and treatment now, you can help prevent these long-term complications.

In terms of which department to visit, since your primary concern is related to your ankle injury, it would be best to see an orthopedic specialist. They are trained specifically to handle musculoskeletal injuries and can provide the most appropriate care. If you have access to a rehabilitation department, they can also be beneficial, especially if you require physical therapy after your initial evaluation.

In conclusion, given your symptoms and the potential for a more serious injury, I strongly recommend that you seek an appointment with an orthopedic specialist as soon as possible. They will be able to provide you with the comprehensive care you need to ensure a proper recovery. Don't hesitate to advocate for your health; it's important to address any concerns you have about your injury.
