Am I possibly pregnant?
Hello, Doctor: I would like to ask about a concern I've had.
For the past two months, I have experienced a small amount of brown discharge a few days before my period, typically 2-4 days prior.
My last menstrual period started on September 4 (with brown discharge on September 1), and this time my period started on September 28 (with slight brown discharge on September 23 and September 26).
On September 26, I visited a gynecologist, who prescribed me to take progesterone (Utrogestan) for three consecutive days, one capsule each day.
The doctor mentioned that I should start counting my cycle after my period begins following the medication.
However, my period started on September 28, so I am wondering if I will have another period after stopping the medication.
Since the timing overlaps, I couldn't find a similar case, so I would appreciate your guidance.
Additionally, is there a possibility that I could be pregnant?
VV, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/10/09
Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, you can stop taking the medication after your period starts on September 28.
It seems you may have a slight deficiency in progesterone, which could be causing the bleeding before your period.
You can consult a gynecologist to regulate your menstrual cycle.
Wishing you good health.

When considering the possibility of pregnancy, especially in the context of irregular menstrual cycles and unusual symptoms, it is essential to understand the various factors that can influence your menstrual health and the signs of pregnancy. Based on your description, you have experienced brown discharge before your periods, which can be a common occurrence for many women. This discharge often indicates old blood that is being expelled from the body and is typically not a cause for concern unless accompanied by other unusual symptoms.
Your last menstrual period began on September 4, and you noted brown discharge on September 1, followed by another episode of brown discharge before your next period, which started on September 28. The presence of brown discharge can sometimes be associated with hormonal fluctuations, ovulation, or the onset of menstruation. It is also worth noting that some women experience spotting or light bleeding when they are about to start their period, which can be mistaken for early pregnancy signs.
Regarding the use of progesterone (in this case, "黄体素" or "progestin"), it is often prescribed to help regulate menstrual cycles and prepare the uterine lining for a potential pregnancy. If you started taking the medication on September 26 and your period began on September 28, it is possible that the medication influenced the timing of your menstrual cycle. However, it is unlikely that you would have a second period immediately after stopping the medication, as the hormonal changes typically take time to stabilize.
To determine if you could be pregnant, consider the following:
1. Timing of Intercourse: If you had unprotected intercourse during your fertile window (which is usually around ovulation), there is a possibility of pregnancy. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next expected period, but this can vary significantly with irregular cycles.
2. Symptoms of Pregnancy: Early signs of pregnancy can include missed periods, nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, and changes in discharge. However, many of these symptoms can also be attributed to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or hormonal changes.
3. Pregnancy Testing: The most reliable way to determine if you are pregnant is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. It is best to take the test after your expected period for the most accurate result.
4. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: Since you have already seen a gynecologist, it is advisable to follow up with them if you have further concerns about your menstrual cycle or potential pregnancy. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current symptoms.
In conclusion, while the symptoms you are experiencing could be related to your menstrual cycle or hormonal changes, the possibility of pregnancy cannot be ruled out without a pregnancy test. If you continue to have irregular cycles or experience unusual symptoms, it is essential to seek further evaluation from your healthcare provider. They can help you understand your menstrual health better and address any concerns you may have regarding pregnancy.
