Fear of becoming pregnant?

Hello doctor, I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on May 24 without using a condom, but there was no ejaculation inside.
After that, my period started around May 31.
Then, around June 20, I experienced some light bleeding again.
I'm not sure if it was leftover from my previous period or something else.
My menstrual cycle is not very regular; it usually comes at the end of each month, occasionally a few days late.
However, now it's the end of July, and my period still hasn't arrived.
A few days ago, I was experiencing constipation, which caused discomfort in my abdomen, but today I've been able to have regular bowel movements, although sometimes it's diarrhea.
My abdomen feels bloated all day, and my stomach is also uneasy.
I often have a lack of appetite and feel constantly anxious.
I'm really worried that I might be pregnant.
Could you please advise me, given this situation, is there a possibility of pregnancy, or is my period just delayed? If I use a pregnancy test now, will it be accurate? Thank you, doctor!

Meng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/27

Hello, based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy.
Your menstrual cycle is currently irregular and overdue, and it is not possible to determine pregnancy solely based on subjective symptoms.
I recommend that you take a urine test to check for pregnancy or consult a physician to investigate the cause of the irregularity, to avoid encountering the same issue in the future.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

It sounds like you're experiencing a lot of uncertainty and anxiety regarding your potential pregnancy, especially given your irregular menstrual cycle and the symptoms you're describing. Let's break down your situation and address your concerns.

Firstly, it's important to understand that the timing of ovulation and menstruation can vary significantly from person to person, and even from cycle to cycle for the same individual. If you had unprotected intercourse on May 24 and your period started on May 31, it is unlikely that you became pregnant during that encounter, especially since you mentioned that there was no ejaculation. However, the bleeding you experienced around June 20 could be due to several factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, or even implantation bleeding if conception had occurred earlier in the cycle.

Your current situation, where your period is late and you're experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms like constipation and bloating, can be quite distressing. Stress and anxiety can also affect your menstrual cycle, potentially causing delays. It's also worth noting that gastrointestinal issues can sometimes mimic pregnancy symptoms, such as bloating and changes in appetite.

Regarding the use of a home pregnancy test, these tests are generally most accurate when taken after a missed period. Since your period is late, using a pregnancy test now would likely provide a reliable result. If you test negative and your period still does not arrive, it may be wise to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In terms of your symptoms, if you are experiencing significant discomfort, persistent bloating, or any other concerning signs, it would be prudent to seek medical advice. Conditions such as ovarian cysts, hormonal imbalances, or gastrointestinal issues could be contributing to your symptoms.

In summary, while the likelihood of pregnancy seems low given the timing and circumstances, the best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test. If the test is negative and your period does not come, or if your symptoms worsen, please consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Remember, it's always better to seek medical advice when in doubt, especially regarding matters of reproductive health.
