The fingers on both hands feel stiff or restricted?
For about four years now, since middle school, I've felt a stiffness in the joints where my little fingers connect to my palms.
I can still bend them, but the angle feels limited to either fully extended or fully bent, and I can't hold them at an intermediate angle.
Since it started, there hasn't been any swelling, and the only pain occurs when I write a lot.
It seems to have become slightly stiffer over time.
Since it's symmetrical, I'm a bit concerned it might be an autoimmune disease.
Could this be the case?

Hello, thank you for your inquiry.
I don't think that's the case; it may be an issue related to joint structure.
If necessary, you can consult an orthopedic clinic.

Symmetrical finger stiffness, especially when it has persisted for several years, can indeed raise concerns about potential underlying conditions, including autoimmune diseases. However, it is essential to approach this issue with a comprehensive understanding of the symptoms and possible diagnoses.
From your description, it seems that you have been experiencing stiffness in the joints of your little fingers, which has not been accompanied by swelling or significant pain except during activities like writing. The fact that the stiffness is symmetrical (affecting both hands) is noteworthy, as many autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, often present with symmetrical joint involvement. However, the absence of swelling and significant pain is somewhat atypical for inflammatory arthritis.
Autoimmune diseases often manifest with a variety of symptoms, including joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. In conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, patients typically experience morning stiffness that improves with movement, along with joint swelling and tenderness. In your case, the stiffness seems to be more mechanical in nature, possibly related to the joint structure or function rather than an inflammatory process.
Given that you have had this stiffness for four years without significant changes or additional symptoms, it may be less likely to be an autoimmune condition. Instead, it could be related to a mechanical issue, such as joint hypermobility or a mild form of osteoarthritis, especially if there is a family history of joint issues. The fact that you can still bend your fingers, albeit with some difficulty, suggests that the range of motion is not severely compromised.
It's also worth considering other non-autoimmune conditions that could cause similar symptoms. For example, conditions like Dupuytren's contracture, which is a thickening of the tissue under the skin of the palm, can lead to stiffness and difficulty in extending the fingers. Another possibility is trigger finger, where the tendons that bend the fingers become irritated and cause stiffness and locking.
To further evaluate your condition, it would be beneficial to consult with a rheumatologist or an orthopedic specialist who can perform a thorough examination, including imaging studies if necessary. They may also conduct blood tests to rule out specific autoimmune markers, even if your symptoms are not overtly indicative of an autoimmune disease.
In the meantime, maintaining joint mobility through gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can be helpful. Occupational therapy may also provide strategies to manage stiffness and improve hand function. If you notice any new symptoms, such as swelling, increased pain, or changes in your range of motion, it is crucial to seek medical advice promptly.
In conclusion, while symmetrical finger stiffness can be concerning, the absence of swelling and significant pain may suggest a non-autoimmune cause. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional will provide clarity and guide appropriate management strategies. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so do not hesitate to seek further medical advice if your symptoms persist or worsen.
