Nipple issues

Hello, Doctor.
About a month ago, I noticed that I experience slight pain when pressing on my left nipple, and there is a small swelling in the nipple area (there are no lumps elsewhere).
It is not visually noticeable, but it is evident that the left nipple is slightly swollen compared to the right one.
I visited a major hospital for a consultation two or three weeks ago, and the doctor mentioned that it might be due to hormonal factors, which I don't usually consume in excess.
The doctor said it wasn't a significant issue at that time.
However, now that two or three weeks have passed, although the pain is not severe and does not significantly affect my daily life, I would like to ask what might be happening.
Should I seek medical attention again? Thank you very much.

However, if your condition has worsened compared to your first visit to the doctor, you should schedule another outpatient appointment.

Nipple pain can be a concerning symptom for many individuals, and it’s important to understand when it may warrant further medical evaluation. Based on your description, it seems you have experienced mild pain in your left nipple, accompanied by slight swelling. While the initial assessment by your doctor suggested that this could be related to hormonal fluctuations, it’s understandable that you may still have concerns, especially since the symptoms have persisted for over a month.

Firstly, it’s essential to recognize that nipple pain can arise from various causes, including hormonal changes, infections, skin conditions, or even benign growths. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly those related to the menstrual cycle, can lead to breast tenderness and swelling. This is often benign and resolves on its own. However, if you are experiencing persistent pain or changes in the breast tissue, it is prudent to keep monitoring the situation.

In your case, since the pain is mild and does not significantly impact your daily life, it may not be an immediate cause for alarm. However, the presence of swelling in the nipple area, even if minor, is something to take note of. Here are some considerations to help you decide whether to seek further medical advice:
1. Duration of Symptoms: If the pain and swelling have persisted for more than a month without improvement, it may be worth revisiting your healthcare provider. Persistent symptoms can sometimes indicate an underlying issue that may require further investigation.

2. Changes in Symptoms: Monitor for any changes in the nature of the pain (e.g., becoming more severe, changing in character) or the appearance of the nipple (e.g., increased swelling, redness, or discharge). Any new symptoms should prompt a medical evaluation.

3. Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as fever, significant swelling, discharge from the nipple, or changes in the skin texture around the nipple, these could indicate an infection or other conditions that require prompt medical attention.

4. Personal Medical History: Consider your personal and family medical history. If you have a history of breast conditions or if there are concerns about breast cancer in your family, it may be advisable to seek further evaluation sooner rather than later.

5. Peace of Mind: If you are feeling anxious or uncertain about your symptoms, it is always reasonable to seek a second opinion or further evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount.

In summary, while your symptoms may be benign, it is essential to remain vigilant. If the symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop new symptoms, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, to assess the breast tissue more closely. Remember, early detection and intervention are key in managing any potential breast-related issues effectively.
