Pain in the left abdomen that feels like an electric shock?
Hello, doctor.
After undergoing an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy on Thursday (results: mild gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux), I started experiencing a sudden electric shock-like sensation in my left abdomen on Friday night.
This sensation does not persist and does not cause pain when pressed.
By Saturday, the frequency of this electric shock-like sensation increased, occurring several times but still only briefly.
I would like to ask the doctor what this could possibly indicate.
Thank you.

Hello: The sensation of being shocked is typically associated with nerve activity.
If there is no improvement, you may consider consulting a gastroenterologist or neurologist at Changhua Hospital to address your health concerns.

Sudden left abdominal pain can be concerning, especially when it presents with unusual sensations like electric shocks. Based on your description, it seems that the pain is intermittent and not associated with pressing on the area, which can provide some clues about its potential causes.
One possible explanation for your symptoms could be related to nerve irritation or involvement. The sensation of "electric" pain may suggest that a nerve in the abdominal area is being compressed or irritated. This could happen due to various reasons, including muscle spasms, inflammation, or even referred pain from other areas of the body. Given that you recently underwent an endoscopy that revealed mild gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), it’s possible that the inflammation in your stomach could be contributing to your discomfort, although it typically wouldn’t cause left-sided abdominal pain directly.
Another consideration is the possibility of gastrointestinal issues. Conditions such as diverticulitis, which is inflammation of small pouches that can form in the walls of the colon, can cause sudden pain in the lower left abdomen. Additionally, issues related to the spleen, such as splenic infarction or enlargement, could also manifest as left-sided abdominal pain. However, these conditions often come with other symptoms, such as fever or changes in bowel habits.
Musculoskeletal issues should also be considered. If you have recently engaged in activities that involve heavy lifting or twisting motions, you could be experiencing muscle strain or even a hernia, which can present as localized pain and discomfort.
It’s also worth noting that anxiety can exacerbate physical symptoms. If you are feeling anxious about your health, this could heighten your perception of pain or discomfort in your abdomen. Stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tension, which might contribute to sensations of pain or discomfort.
Given that your symptoms have increased in frequency and you have a history of gastrointestinal issues, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to rule out any serious conditions. Additionally, a follow-up with a gastroenterologist may be beneficial, especially since you have already been diagnosed with mild gastritis and GERD.
In summary, while your symptoms may not indicate an immediate emergency, they warrant further investigation to determine the underlying cause. It’s essential to monitor any additional symptoms, such as changes in bowel habits, fever, or persistent pain, and seek medical attention if these occur. Always prioritize your health and well-being by consulting with a healthcare provider who can offer personalized advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
