Taking Yikui tablets for body nourishment?

Hello Dr.
Chen,
I underwent an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy on Monday, and the doctor diagnosed me with a gastric ulcer and a duodenal ulcer caused by Helicobacter pylori.
On Wednesday, the doctor prescribed me a three-month supply of a medication called "Yikuaidan." On Thursday, around noon, I took one tablet of Yikuaidan, and later for lunch, I went to a breakfast place I frequently visit.
By the afternoon, I experienced itching all over my body, but when I woke up the next morning, the itching had mostly subsided.
I have never had this experience before, so I became quite anxious and made an appointment for next week.
I would like to ask:
1.
Should I continue taking Yikuaidan before my appointment next week, or should I stop taking it for now?
2.
Have there been any reported cases of patients being allergic to Yikuaidan? I couldn't find any related information online, so perhaps I ingested something else that I shouldn't have?

Joez, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/06

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Any medication can potentially cause an allergic reaction, but it is not yet proven that this specific drug is the cause.
It may be advisable to take an antihistamine and try the medication again, or to switch to a different drug altogether.

When it comes to the side effects of medications like Eitui pills (which I assume refers to a proton pump inhibitor or similar medication for stomach ulcers), it’s essential to understand both the potential adverse effects and the underlying conditions being treated.
1. Understanding Eitui Pills: Eitui pills are typically prescribed to reduce stomach acid production, which helps in healing ulcers and managing conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Common side effects of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) include headache, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and abdominal pain. However, allergic reactions, while less common, can occur. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include itching, rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing.

2. Your Reaction: The itching you experienced after taking the Eitui pill could potentially indicate an allergic reaction, especially since it occurred shortly after ingestion. However, it’s also possible that the itching was unrelated to the medication and could have been caused by something else you consumed or an environmental factor. Since the itching resolved by the next day, it might suggest a transient reaction rather than a severe allergic response.

3. What to Do Next: Before your appointment with the doctor, it’s advisable to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any worsening of symptoms or develop new symptoms such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing, you should seek immediate medical attention. In the meantime, it may be prudent to stop taking the Eitui pills until you can discuss it with your healthcare provider. They can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether it’s safe for you to continue the medication or if an alternative treatment is necessary.

4. Allergic Reactions: While there are documented cases of allergic reactions to PPIs, they are relatively rare. If you have a history of allergies to medications, it’s important to inform your doctor. They may consider alternative medications or conduct tests to determine the cause of your reaction.

5. Dietary Considerations: It’s also worth considering that certain foods or beverages consumed around the same time as the medication could have contributed to your reaction. For instance, some individuals may have sensitivities to specific ingredients in foods, which could lead to symptoms like itching. Keeping a food diary may help identify any potential triggers.

6. Follow-Up: During your follow-up appointment, be sure to discuss your experience in detail with your doctor. They may recommend allergy testing or suggest a different class of medication if they suspect an allergy to the Eitui pills. Additionally, they can provide guidance on managing your stomach ulcers effectively while minimizing side effects.

In summary, while it’s possible to have an allergic reaction to Eitui pills, it’s also important to consider other factors that could have contributed to your symptoms. Monitoring your condition and discussing it with your healthcare provider will help ensure you receive the appropriate treatment for your stomach ulcers while addressing any side effects you may experience.
