Post-Hemorrhoid Surgery: Is Bleeding and Pain Normal? - Surgery

Post-hemorrhoid surgery

I had moles and polyps removed on January 6th, and I've been taking medication for soft stools these past few days.
I just had a bowel movement and noticed several drops of blood in the toilet, along with mild pain in the anal area.
Is this normal? Will frequent bowel movements slow down the healing of the wounds?

You Fan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/09

Dr. Zhang Shuhao reply Surgery

After a wound has just been sutured and is not yet fully healed, bowel movements may cause slight bleeding due to friction against the wound.
If bowel movements are painful or uncomfortable, it is advisable to increase the intake of fluids and easily digestible soft foods, reduce the frequency of bowel movements, and avoid straining as much as possible.
Regular warm sitz baths are also recommended.
Normal bowel movements will not affect wound healing.

After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, experiencing some bleeding and pain can be common, but it is essential to understand the context and severity of these symptoms. Hemorrhoid surgery, whether it involves the removal of external hemorrhoids, internal hemorrhoids, or other related procedures, can lead to a variety of postoperative symptoms, including pain, bleeding, and discomfort during bowel movements.

Firstly, it is important to note that some bleeding after hemorrhoid surgery can be expected, especially within the first few days post-operation. This bleeding may occur due to the healing process of the surgical site. The surgical area is sensitive and can be easily irritated, particularly during bowel movements. If you notice a few drops of blood in the toilet after a bowel movement, it may not be unusual, especially if you are experiencing some pain. However, if the bleeding is significant, or if you are soaking through pads or experiencing large clots, this could indicate a complication, and you should seek medical attention immediately.

Pain is also a common symptom following hemorrhoid surgery. The surgical site can be tender, and bowel movements may exacerbate this discomfort. It is crucial to manage pain effectively, as uncontrolled pain can lead to constipation, which in turn can complicate healing. If you are taking stool softeners, this is a positive step, as they can help ease the passage of stool and reduce straining, which is vital for recovery. Straining during bowel movements can indeed slow down the healing process and may lead to further bleeding or complications.

To promote healing and minimize discomfort, consider the following recommendations:
1. Dietary Adjustments: Ensure you are consuming a high-fiber diet to facilitate softer stools. Foods rich in fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Staying well-hydrated is also crucial, as it helps soften the stool.

2. Pain Management: If you are experiencing significant pain, discuss with your doctor about appropriate pain relief options. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be helpful, but always follow your doctor's advice regarding medication.

3. Warm Sitz Baths: Taking warm sitz baths can provide relief from pain and help with relaxation of the anal area. This can also promote blood flow to the area, aiding in the healing process.

4. Avoid Straining: When you feel the urge to have a bowel movement, try not to delay it. However, avoid straining. If you find it difficult to pass stool, consider using a stool softener or a gentle laxative as recommended by your healthcare provider.

5. Follow-Up Care: It is essential to have follow-up appointments with your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can assess your healing progress and address any concerns you may have about your symptoms.

6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If you notice an increase in pain, persistent bleeding, fever, or any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), contact your healthcare provider promptly.

In summary, while some bleeding and pain can be normal after hemorrhoid surgery, it is crucial to monitor the severity and frequency of these symptoms. Ensure you are taking steps to promote healing and manage discomfort effectively. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
