Post-operative issues after wisdom tooth extraction?

Hello, Doctor: I had my lower right wisdom tooth extracted on the evening of January 5th, and they performed suturing.
I have not experienced any pain or other unusual symptoms, and the swelling in my face seems to be decreasing.
However, there is still a slight oozing of blood, and my mouth has a metallic taste.
When I looked in the mirror, it appeared to be just a little bit of blood mixed with saliva.
Is this a normal phenomenon? Thank you!

Kenan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/09

Hello: The initial healing of a wound typically takes at least one week.
Clinically, it is common to see wounds that remain unhealed even after more than a week, so there is no need for excessive concern.
When the sutures are removed, please have the physician check again.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is quite common to experience some minor bleeding, especially within the first few days post-surgery. The bleeding you are describing, characterized by a small amount of blood mixed with saliva and a blood taste in your mouth, can be considered a normal part of the healing process.
When a tooth is extracted, the surgical site undergoes a healing process that involves the formation of a blood clot. This clot is crucial as it protects the underlying bone and nerves while the tissue heals. Minor bleeding can occur as the clot stabilizes, and it may be exacerbated by activities such as talking, eating, or even rinsing your mouth. If you notice that the bleeding is minimal and not accompanied by significant pain or swelling, it is generally not a cause for concern.

However, there are a few important points to consider regarding post-operative care:
1. Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Ensure you are following the post-operative care instructions provided by your dentist or oral surgeon. This typically includes avoiding vigorous rinsing, sucking through straws, or any activities that could dislodge the blood clot.

2. Monitor the Bleeding: While minor bleeding is normal, you should keep an eye on the amount and duration. If the bleeding persists for more than a few days or becomes heavy, you should contact your dentist. Heavy bleeding may indicate that the blood clot has been dislodged or that there is an issue with the healing process.

3. Pain Management: If you experience pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications, or if the pain worsens, it may be a sign of a complication such as dry socket, which occurs when the blood clot is lost too early.

4. Signs of Infection: Watch for signs of infection, which can include increased swelling, redness, fever, or pus discharge from the extraction site. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

5. Diet and Hydration: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days and stay hydrated. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that could irritate the extraction site.

In summary, minor bleeding after wisdom tooth extraction is typically normal, especially in the initial days following the procedure. However, if you have any concerns about the amount of bleeding or if you experience any unusual symptoms, it is always best to consult with your dentist or oral surgeon for personalized advice and reassurance. They can provide guidance based on your specific situation and ensure that your healing process is on track.
