Menstrual period lasting for 8 days?

Hello, doctor.
I have had irregular menstrual cycles since I was young, typically varying by 3 to 7 days.
My periods used to last between 3 to 7 days, but I have noticed that for the past two months, my periods have been lasting up to 8 days.
On the 8th day, there is a small amount of brown discharge and a very small amount of bright red blood.
Is this within the normal range?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle or cause intermenstrual bleeding are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraceptive pills, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine or cervical lesions, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, miscarriage, and breastfeeding, among others.
It is advisable to consult a gynecologist if symptoms persist or worsen to determine if there is a hormonal imbalance or other underlying causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

An 8-day menstrual period can be considered within the realm of normalcy, but it largely depends on individual circumstances and the overall pattern of your menstrual cycle. Menstrual cycles can vary significantly from person to person, and even from month to month for the same individual.
Typically, a menstrual cycle lasts anywhere from 21 to 35 days, with the bleeding phase (menstruation) lasting between 2 to 7 days. However, some women may experience longer periods, and this can be influenced by various factors such as hormonal imbalances, stress, changes in weight, and underlying medical conditions.

In your case, you mentioned that your menstrual cycles have been irregular since you were young, fluctuating by 3 to 7 days. This irregularity can be attributed to several factors, including hormonal fluctuations, lifestyle changes, or even conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The fact that your periods have recently extended to 8 days, with the last day showing a small amount of brown discharge and a little fresh red blood, could indicate a few things.

1. Normal Variation: It’s possible that your body is simply experiencing a normal variation in your menstrual cycle. Some women may have longer periods occasionally without any underlying issues.

2. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations can lead to changes in the menstrual cycle. Factors such as stress, changes in body weight, or even changes in physical activity can impact hormone levels, leading to longer periods.

3. Uterine Health: Conditions such as fibroids or polyps can cause prolonged bleeding. These are benign growths in the uterus that can lead to heavier and longer menstrual bleeding.

4. Endometrial Issues: In some cases, prolonged bleeding can be associated with issues in the endometrial lining, such as endometrial hyperplasia, which is an overgrowth of the endometrial lining that can lead to irregular bleeding.

5. Pregnancy or Miscarriage: If there is any chance of pregnancy, it’s important to consider that some women experience bleeding in early pregnancy, which can sometimes be mistaken for a menstrual period.

Given your history of irregular cycles and the recent changes, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend a pelvic examination, ultrasound, or hormonal testing to rule out any underlying conditions that could be contributing to your prolonged periods.
In summary, while an 8-day menstrual period can be normal for some women, especially those with a history of irregular cycles, it’s essential to monitor any additional symptoms you may experience, such as severe pain, excessive bleeding, or other unusual changes. Keeping a menstrual diary can also be beneficial, as it helps track your cycle patterns and any associated symptoms, which can provide valuable information to your healthcare provider.
