Menstrual irregularities
Hello, doctor.
Recently, during the New Year, I have been consuming more nourishing foods, such as lamb hot pot, almost every day from a few weeks before my period until it started.
Now my period has lasted almost 10 days, which has never happened before.
The blood flow has been very light from days 7 to 10, and I can manage with a panty liner, where I notice pink and brown spotting.
I would like to ask if consuming too many supplements could cause an extended menstrual period.
Thank you for your response.
Yun, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/24

Hello, ten days is quite a long time; it should not be related to food.
I recommend seeing a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Eating a balanced diet is crucial for maintaining overall health and regulating bodily functions, including the menstrual cycle. Your question about whether consuming too many nutrient-rich foods can delay your period is quite relevant, especially considering the dietary changes you mentioned during the New Year celebrations.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that the menstrual cycle can be influenced by a variety of factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and dietary habits. While nutrient-rich foods are generally beneficial, consuming them in excess or making sudden changes to your diet can potentially disrupt your hormonal balance, which may lead to changes in your menstrual cycle.
In your case, you mentioned consuming a lot of nourishing foods, like lamb hot pot, in the weeks leading up to your period. While these foods are rich in protein and other nutrients, they can also be high in fats and calories. If your overall caloric intake significantly increased, it could lead to weight gain or changes in body composition, both of which can affect your menstrual cycle. Additionally, certain foods can influence estrogen levels in the body. For example, foods high in phytoestrogens (like soy products) can mimic estrogen and potentially disrupt the hormonal balance if consumed in large quantities.
Moreover, the duration and flow of your period can also be affected by stress levels and lifestyle changes. If you experienced any stress during the holiday season, it could have contributed to the changes in your menstrual cycle. Stress can lead to hormonal fluctuations that may delay ovulation or alter the menstrual flow.
Regarding the specific symptoms you described—having a prolonged period with lighter flow and unusual colors (pink and brown)—these can be indicative of hormonal changes or other underlying issues. Brown blood often represents older blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus, while pink blood can occur when the flow is light. While these symptoms can be normal variations in menstrual cycles, especially after a significant dietary change, they can also warrant further investigation if they persist.
In conclusion, while eating nutrient-rich foods is generally beneficial, moderation is key. It’s essential to maintain a balanced diet that includes a variety of food groups to support hormonal health. If you continue to experience irregularities in your menstrual cycle, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide personalized advice and may recommend further evaluation to rule out any underlying conditions that could be affecting your menstrual health.
In the meantime, consider focusing on a balanced diet that includes adequate fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while also ensuring you stay hydrated and manage stress effectively. This holistic approach can help support your overall health and may contribute to a more regular menstrual cycle.
