After retinal laser treatment, the treated area may appear dark?
Hello Doctor: Recently, I have noticed an increase in the number of floaters in my vision.
Therefore, on Friday, January 27, I went to an ophthalmology clinic for a dilated eye exam.
During the examination, it was found that the retina in my right eye was thinning.
Since the clinic did not have the necessary equipment, I was referred to Taoyuan General Hospital for further evaluation.
On January 28, the doctor at Taoyuan examined the fundus of both eyes and discovered that there were also retinal issues in my left eye.
Consequently, I underwent laser surgery on both eyes that same day.
After returning home, I noticed that the area around the laser treatment site appeared dark, similar to the effect of staring at a bright light for too long.
I am unsure if this is a normal phenomenon and whether it will return to normal over time.
Although the small dark area in my lower field of vision does not significantly affect my daily life, it feels quite disconcerting.
Additionally, I find that I become particularly fatigued when looking at screens.
As a result, I spent most of the day of the surgery and the following day resting in bed.
My eyes also feel swollen and tend to be dry.
I am wondering if this is a normal occurrence?

More Info
After undergoing laser treatment for retinal issues, it is not uncommon to experience some visual disturbances, including the appearance of black spots or shadows in your field of vision. This phenomenon can be concerning, especially if you are also noticing increased eye fatigue and discomfort. Let’s delve into the potential reasons behind these symptoms and what you can expect moving forward.
Understanding the Symptoms
1. Black Spots and Shadows: The black spots or shadows you are experiencing, particularly after laser treatment, may be attributed to several factors. One common cause is the presence of vitreous floaters, which are tiny clumps of gel or cells that float in the vitreous humor of the eye. After laser treatment, the vitreous gel can undergo changes, leading to an increase in floaters. This is often a benign condition, but it can be exacerbated by the laser procedure, especially if the retina was previously compromised.
2. Post-Laser Treatment Effects: The laser treatment itself is designed to address issues such as retinal thinning or tears. While it is generally safe, some patients report temporary visual disturbances post-procedure. The appearance of a dark area in your vision could be related to the laser's impact on the retinal tissue or the surrounding vitreous. It is essential to monitor these symptoms, as they may improve over time as the eye heals.
3. Eye Fatigue and Discomfort: Feeling fatigued or experiencing discomfort, such as swelling or dryness in the eyes, is also common after laser procedures. The eyes may need time to adjust, and the healing process can lead to temporary sensitivity, especially when using screens or reading. It is advisable to take regular breaks and practice the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to reduce eye strain.
When to Seek Further Evaluation
While some post-treatment symptoms are normal, it is crucial to remain vigilant. If the black spots or shadows persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as flashes of light, significant vision changes, or pain, you should contact your eye care provider promptly. These could be signs of complications such as retinal detachment or other serious conditions that require immediate attention.
Recommendations for Recovery
1. Follow-Up Appointments: Ensure you attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your ophthalmologist. They will monitor your healing process and assess any changes in your vision.
2. Rest and Care: Allow your eyes to rest, especially in the days following the procedure. Limit screen time and avoid activities that require intense focus until your symptoms improve.
3. Hydration and Lubrication: Use artificial tears to alleviate dryness and discomfort. Staying hydrated can also help maintain overall eye health.
4. Protect Your Eyes: Wear sunglasses when outdoors to protect your eyes from bright light and UV exposure, which can exacerbate sensitivity.
5. Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for eye health. Regular exercise and avoiding smoking can also contribute positively to your overall ocular health.
Conclusion
In summary, while experiencing black spots and eye fatigue after laser treatment can be concerning, these symptoms are often part of the healing process. However, it is essential to stay vigilant and communicate with your healthcare provider about any persistent or worsening symptoms. With proper care and monitoring, many patients find that their symptoms improve over time, leading to better visual outcomes. Always prioritize your eye health and seek professional guidance whenever in doubt.
